Fun Day!  Sucess!

Gash is a good one! Done it multiple times, this particular outing was part of a trip out to Sky Pilot, via the popular backcountry skiing route along the ridge to Gash Point's West!

One of my favorite   Sucess!

I have only been to the true summit once, I have skied “skiers gash” 4 times and counting. Definitely one of the more accessible and safe places to backcountry ski in the bitterroot.

July 28   Sucess!

Trail is good for a minute but the ridge above the trail is way faster... an east facing slope covered in trees about 8,300ft with tons of snow melt very refreshing.
On our way to Sky Pilot and eventually Pearl Lake this peak was just a pass through, smoky in the valley but Sky Pilot and Bear Lake were visible. Took the ridge that connects Gash to Sky Pilot and than up the northeast face of Sky Pilot... signed the book in the crate on the west ridge of Sky Pilot...across a massive meadow and on our way to Pearl Lake, most beautiful sunset ever brighter pink than ever. Next morning went out South fork Big creek down 6miles of Big creek and headed to Saint Mary's, got turned around halfway, ran out of time.

On The Way...  Sucess!

to "Sweathouse Peak". I walked the ridge out to the next peak - 8839. That's a great summit, but the connecting ridge is quite tough! A long boulder slog. Gash Point is pretty awesome, too, but it can get awfully hot going up through the burn if you are hiking in the summertime. Great views! Love this area!

Gash hiked  Sucess!

Don't follow the trail, but stay on the north ridge to avoid the downed trees from the fire. The trail only exsists for 1/4 mile, so you don't gain much. It maybe a bit longer of a hike, but worth looking into Sweathouse canyon once you are on the ridge. Gorgeous hike and great views. Remember the actual summit is about 1/4 mile north, once you hit the saddle. Follow the creek back down to enjoy the ponds. Still plenty of snow patches and water in 2012 July.

Gash Point  Sucess!

Can't recall the exact date. November '09? Low clouds blocked the view of Sky Pilot and only allowed a fleeting glimpse of Bear Lake.

Great Ski area  Sucess!

Probably not a spectacular hike in summer, but this is a great backcountry ski area in winter.

powder  Sucess!

There was 40 inches of fresh snow. It was the most amazing day of skiing I have ever had. Gash point will live in infamy.

Enjoy the Burn  Sucess!

16may10 - I decided to hit the mountains a bit earlier this year. Gash Point was the first of the year. The snow was a bit on the crappy side - not very consolidated very well yet. Had to use snowshoes even early in the morning while climbing. Yuck!

10jun09 - Used this summit as an early-season get-in-shape climb. Good weather and great views always make this summit a nice place to visit.

3jun08 - Decided to see just how much snow there was up high after our very snowy Bitterroot Winter. There was still a lot. Close to the summit there were drifts over 20' deep. Saw several elk cows, prints from mule deer, and a squirrel above snow line.

October 2006 - Climbed just to see what damage had been caused by the summer's Gash Creek Fire. Not too bad.

July 2006 - As it had rained fairly heavily the night before, bushwhacking up this route provided us with very wet legs and feet. The humidity kept the rest of our bodies wet with sweat!
