Lots of Class(y) 4  Sucess!

After sussing out Jigsaw Pass when I climbed Aperture a few days ago, I just skipped along and tagged a couple of high points on the way to Gendarme. Great day out, not a soul in sight. Enjoyed the run out regardless of tripping onto my face.

Via Bishop Trail ... sort of ...  Sucess!

The Bishop Pass trail was nothing but snow. I don't think 10% of my entire hike was on dirt. When I got close to the Jigsaw Pass, still in the valley, I turned left toward the mountains and hiked up the frozen snow. The hike up was easy (I had crampons and two ice axes,) or anyhow, easier than on the rocks. I got in a shaft left (East) of Jigsaw Pass and I really liked it, more so that the pass itself. This turned out to be to my benefit for I went to Gendarme Peak and not Aperture. Jigsaw is closer to Aperture and at a higher elevation. From my point of view I figured that it was easier to get to Gendarme's summit by following the ridge. It wasn't easier, but in that manner I hit every false summit going East to West, thinking it was THE summit. I actually went passed the real summit thinking the other, next over peak, was the summit. I returned and with a lot of work I was able to locate the summit registry, which does not have a pen. So I took a picture of it since I did not have a pen, and nothing with which I could record my event. I came down mostly on snow and that was nice, until I hit the trail, sort of, and the going got really hard due to the soft snow. And with this, I tagged all of the summits on the Inconsolable Ridge.

From Robinson  Sucess!

This is a great scramble up from the Jigsaw Pass area. So many possible routes on good rock, and an easy descent on sandy stuff.

Instead of Picture Puzzle  Sucess!

Wanted to climb Picture Puzzle but the south facing snow slopes turned into a gloppy mess. Beautiful Peak and views. Descend to the southern valley and Lake Five.

from Picture Puzzle  Sucess!

Unnervingly loose passing the first and second notches to the east off of Picture Puzzle, and a straightforward boulder hop after that. I missed the register going out and ended up climbing the 1st and 3rd gendarmes, the latter requiring an airy little move.

From Seventh Lake - NF Big Pine  Sucess!

lots of boulder hopping and sun cupped snow fields to navigate up from 7th lake. a short section of class 3 or 4 (?) scrambling to ascend to gendarmes ridge, then more boulder hopping down to 5th lake past the scary smiley face. fun and tiring day having started at 3rd lake.

2007 Sierra Challenge via Jigsaw  Sucess!

Up and down one incorrect pass, then up another incorrect pass to Gendarme. Will the real Jigsaw Pass please stand up? Hit the real pass on the way down. See the map I posted for correct location.

From Jigsaw Pass  Sucess!

Thanks to the photos Mike L. posted here, I had no problem finding the pass. Climbed up on fairly solid class 3 rock. From the pass it was mostly a talus slog to the top. The best climbing of the day I found on Aperture Peak (solid class 3/4 via NW chute). Tagged Chocolate Peak on the way back as well.

2007 Sierra Challenge  Sucess!

Day 5 was an easier outing. With Ryan Spaulding, tagged Picture Puzzle, Gendarme, and Aperture Peak. We descended from Jigsaw Pass at the correct location, only to take the more difficult chute because we didn't know better. Not the most obvious pass in the Sierra. Trip Report

From Picture Puzzle  Sucess!

Third peak of four today that included Chocolate, Picture Puzzle, Gendarme (+ 3 of 4 gendarmes), and Aperture. Descend via Jigsaw Pass. Climbed to Gendarme #4 to look at route to Two Eagle Peak -- decided traverse would take too long (lot's of class 3 bypassing of class 4/5 climbs). Climbed to just below #3 and decide cl. 4/5 exposed routes not worth the risks. #1 & 2 were easy.

Jigsaw Pass  Sucess!

Jigsaw pass isn't too bad if you know a) where it is and b) how to navigate it. Going up I found rather enjoyable high cl3 scambling. Going down was a little sketchy in spots, but I think I was a little too far to the right.

Jigsaw Pass  Sucess!

from Bishop Pass Trail - Ascended an incorrect "jigsaw pass", but was able to successfully find the right one on the way down. Great views of the Palisades to the south.
