Socked In  Sucess!

A lot of folks out today in spite of the forecast; parking spilled out onto the road. Rain off and on the first couple miles on the way up.

Not sure how many folks went for the summit and how many went to the lake. A number of people turned around once they hit the snow due to not having proper gear (a wise choice). Some appeared to summit without microspikes and trekking poles, sacrificing better judgment.

No axe necessary but the snow was slushy and sloppy. Only received peekaboo views through small breaks in cloud cover from the top. It appeared to mostly clear up as I was on the descent.

Fun hike.

For speed  Sucess!

57:30 from trailhead to touching the lookout. Still a bit of snow on the north side, and the trail is a mess higher up, but a fun cloudy-day activity.

Granite Mountain  Sucess!

Strenuous hike but all was well. Tarns all dried up. We will have to return to see the beargrass blooming in the meadows.

standard route  Sucess!

Cloudy and windy, unfortunately no views. Still a good day in the mountains, getting to the trailhead by 7 AM really cuts down the number of people you run into on the way up.

Standard Trail  Sucess!

Cloudy day with no views. I really loved the last 1 1/2 miles of the trail. The beargrass was stunning! There was some snow along the trail but manageable, 2 1/2 hours up. We spent all off 5 minutes at the top due to zero views, but spent well over an hour in the boulder fields below having some tea and scrambling on the boulders. I really liked this one. Great for conditioning, but next time I'll take the boulders all the way up instead of the trail. Great fun! 6 hours car to car.

Nice variety at the top  Sucess!

Another peak good for getting a workout/training. Nice bit of scrambling and boulder-hopping the last 3-400 ft up to the lookout tower.

Pan-fried on Granite.  Sucess!

Hiked this one last summer. Didn't care to hear the cars on I-90 most of the way. Apart from that I immensely enjoyed being out on the open granite slopes in the full sun. Lots of wildflowers delight in. Took pictures of pink spirea with Mt. Rainier as a backdrop. They turned out beautifully. Word of warning - keep hydrated & sunblocked. I kept pushing on instead of stopping for any breaks and got a little sick. Lesson learned.

summer route in winter  Sucess!

Not enough snow to worry about avalanche danger on the summer route. Other tracks went up the talus ridge for the final push to the summit, but we foolishly decided to try the north side (where the summer trail goes after crossing the bowl), which had more than enough snow to be exhausting - took almost two hours for that section.

Snowy hike  Sucess!

Another fine outing with the Boy Scouts. Saw a fawn trying to hide and play dead in a high meadow on the mountain. Also nice glissading near the top

Above the clouds and warm  Sucess!

I was more than tired of the recent temperature inversion so I decided it was time I summit the super popular Granite Mountain. I was the first to arrive at the parking lot and only saw one person behind me at about 4700'. Whoever it was turned around and I didnt see anyone until the summit. Views were absolutely stunning and temps climbed as high as 65 near the summit. Followed some tracks down the W. Ridge and then S. to the main trail. It was a lot more fun than descending the main route unless you have skis.

Good day hike  Sucess!

Good quick day hike in the afternoon. Three hours up and another two hours back down. A little bit hazy to see too far onto the horizon.
