We hiked up the Ruby Gulch route, dodging sketchy weather all day.We pretty much had both summits to ourselves, and no wind!
Didn't see any goats, though.
Took the standard route up. For early June, it was very dry and the trail was open all the way up save for two or three small sections of ice and snow.
Done as a combo with Torreys.
Did both Grays and Torreys. Felt good to do two mountains in a day. Went on a Monday and not as many people around.
Growning up, I climbed Grays/Torreys MANY TIMES in the 1990s but this is the most recent. I escorted my cousin Watky and my friend Nick with me; it was their first time up there. We almost didn't make it due to the approaching dark clouds. We snapped some pics and did a rush descent.
I've summitted Grays on many occasions, in all seasons, in all conditions. I used it as a training peak for Nepal. I love the valley, the ridge, and the area. It's a bit crowded on summer week ends, but people drawn to mountains are always fun and cool (even if there are a lot of them). It's a great initial peak for beginners, but don't get fooled- watch the weather and don't be on the ridge if there's any electricity! When I was a kid (early 80's), a couple guys made a bivouac just off the summit and were struck by lightning/killed in the middle of the night.
Great day, great views, greater people
Great hike, very proud of myself for making this climb/hike in 4:20 total (I live at 500 ft. elevation). Great day for this upstate New Yorker to wrap up 4 days in a row of CO 14er bagging (3 days in the San Juans and 1 up here).
Beautiful day - started early and enjoyed the top to myself
I still haven't figured out how to get past the first creek crossing without getting my feet wet. Regardless, great day on a great route!
Good trip for a first 14er
Did Torreys also. Got to see the goats.
Great weather, hordes of people, did w/Torreys
The clutch on my 1993 Tempo was protesting "never again" after the drive up the Stevens Gulch road. Warmed up on Kelso the day before then did Grays and Torreys by the standard route.Mountain goat on Torreys.
A beautiful day and a fun hike. We saw the mountain goats and several falcons or hawks (not sure). An EXTREMELY busy trail but I expected that. Gorgeous wildflowers! Went on to Torreys afterwards.
I've climbed this one 5 times so far, on different occasions of course.
Summitted via the Lost Rat - right hand variation. To my surprise the snow was in great shape for so late in the season. It was starting to melt out towards the top though. Great snow climb.
Took the standard trail up on a fantastic day. More than a few people on the trail, but I didn't mind, I hiked my 1st 14er!
Hiked the standard route.
First and Second official 14ers. Couldn't have been a more beautiful day. Up close pictures of Mountain Goats. Beautiful wild flowers. Lots of people on the trail. Who can blame them? :o)
