From Torreys  Sucess!

Summited from Torreys after doing Kelso Ridge. The scree slog up from the saddle was really boring. I don't think I would have ever done Grays if I wasn't already on top of Torreys via a pretty cool route.

Twofer  Sucess!

Slept at the TH, started around 7:45 and did Greys and Torreys. On the way down, we did an amazing glissade. These were 14ers number 14 and 15 for me. These were also are 8th and 9th 13k+ peak in 3 days. Cool views and an amazing area. Definitely worth the visit.

Grays in the Winter  Sucess!

Had a great day hike with my friend Kara. There was only one other group climbing that day so it was really peaceful compared to the usual summer throngs. Really windy but otherwise a amazing day and our first winter ascent!

Smokey Skies  Sucess!

The smoke from the California wildfires was thick in the horizon during the 14er hike. I could even smell the smoke!

First 14er  Sucess!

This was my first 14er, which I hiked in 1994. After summitting Grays, I continued on to Torreys Peak. I returned for another ascent a few years later.

Grays and Torreys  Sucess!

Winter ascent of the pair, started at the bottom of the road, but surprisingly it was still drivable for about 2 1/2 miles. The trail is well packed down and snow shoes are not necessary. Yak-trax or mini-spikes may be helpful in a few hardpacked spots, but I didn't use them. Upper part of Grays is pretty dry, skis would be basically worthless.

Grays/Torreys-Got Both  Sucess!

Made the summit of Torreys and began down the South Face to the cleavage. But did make a pause to look around as we were leaving the summit. I was amazed at looking down how Kelso Mountain looks like it was chopped in half with the North Face missing. And looking way down at the trail we had climbed up, and to the South at the Remarkables. I highly recommend taking a pause on any climb, so you can take it, wrap it, and keep into your memory.

Continued down to the cleavage and picked the cairns up the North Face of Grays. Daniel, one of my team and best friends, was really hurting from altitude sickness but churned thru to the summit. Made the summit at 1200 hrs.

Weather from your typical CO 14'er storms was rolling in so it was not time to leap in joy of our achievements. While trying to ralley our team from the summit, I found our teamate Den just looking off the South side of the summit. He was in his own pause, looking around as if he were a little kid. But it was time to go.

Left the summit at 1230 hrs (way too late for 14'ers) and down the zigzag trail of the East Face. Ran into a lone girl climber on the descent at about 13,000 ft with just a t-shirt/fanny pack and no gear. And the weather was getting worse up high and getting low. Really tried to change her direction but she would not have it. Very upsetting. Got back to the trailhead/car at 1500 hrs with both mountains buried up high with storms. But still wonder to this day about that lone girl climber. Why?

Grays & Torreys  Sucess!

Took the opportunity to climb Grays and Torreys from Stephens Gulch TH during a warm spell lasting past the weekend. Still quite windy and cold on the summits and saddle between the two peaks. Post-holeing through knee-deep drifts at times with a good bit of snow and ice present on the final pitches. A blast!

Bachelor Hike  Sucess!

Summitted Grays after Torreys on a day hike as part of my friends bachelor party. The road was too rough for our car, but we hiked from the road just below the first major washout.

Great day, great hike. My 11 year old accomplished #2. For Grays and Torreys it took a relaxed 7 1/2 hrs...willows turning and aspen turning. It was great.David

standard route  Sucess!

Probably could have driven, but hiked up from the interstate to make it a fair fight. There should be a law against summit cell phone use.

Grays (twice) and Torreys  Sucess!

I've climbed Grays Peak several times, usually in combination with Torreys. Although Grays is a very popular and busy mountain, it is still enjoyable and recommended.
