Great place to take the kids, camp, play in the water, hike, go 4-wheelin' & visit hot springs. Avoid July/August because of insane amounts mosquitos. In May the river runs through the bottom of the Dunes and makes it a water wonderland in the middle of the desert - pretty neat. Easy access to great hikes & climbs from here, too. Hike north on foot out of Park to access old ghost town of Liberty, Cottonwood & more...
My new wife and I visited here on our honeymoon in summer of 1997.

One of my best trips.
Drove from Denver to the campground. We saw a huge tornado on the road. Hiked up to High Dune with Boris and Karina. One of my best trips ever.!

Merry Christmas
Came here on Christmas Day and it was freezing and so windy! I loved every moment of it though. It's like walking on another world. The scenery around the dunes is incredible too, especially once you wander up to the high point.
Love the dunes. What an unexpected place in the heart of the rocky mountains . The dunes can get awfully hot in the summer (hot enough to burn skin) and the moving sand can really sting. Also love the hummingbirds.
Been here twice - 2000 and 2008 and found that I like it best after a rain when the sand is damp and hiking up the dunes is easiest! This is an amazing place to visit and camp at!
