Did hiking and wading with my kids here. They loved it! They dubbed the place "Jurassic Dunes".

Fascinating place
Climbed up a dune or two, away from the afternoon crowd. Views of the Sangre de Cristos in fall color behind the dunes were really something... one of these days I'd like to return to hike some peaks.

Beautiful area. Includes the Upper and Lower Sand Lakes Basin, Milwaukee Peak, Music Mountain, Tijeras Peak, etc.

Bluebird day, little breezy. Think I made it to the top of Star Dune. No swimming this time of year unfortunately
The best thing to do is to find the biggest, baddest dune, face straight doen, run as fast as you can and yell!!

Nothing quite like it in North America
Took a rest day after a failed attempt at Blanca Peak the day before. Romped all over the dunes after a morning thunderstorm blew through. I had a lot of fun but I guess the time to go with kids is in late spring when the snowmelt comes down off the mountains and makes a sort of beach near the dunes.
Hiked the tallest dune. Later skied some dunes with my daughter's Girl Scout Troop.

Amazing Place
Went here on a weekend trip - camped on the Medano Pass Road and played in the Sand Dunes the next day. Far fewer regulations than most National Parks (dogs are allowed).
Hiked up a number of the sand dunes. Others were skiing the sand!! Need to come back with my tele skis and try that.

Mosca Pass
Unfortunately missed the peak of fall colors and the wind made climbing the dunes miserable. However, I enjoyed a nice walk up the canyon to Mosca Pass.

Be careful with the lightningA storm popped up in about 10 minutes and we high tailed it out of there. Such an interesting an unique place. Had a blast.

Amazing DunesSuch a crazy site to these dunes in the middle of COs high peaks. A neat side trip that I enjoyed tremendously!

Very Unique ExperienceI've been here twice and just love it. The second time we went out hiking for several hours amongst the dunes. Would love to go back and do it again!

Skiing the DunesI've gone down for skiing a few times, in 2010 skied over 7000 vert in a day, last year after my vertical mile got chased off by thunderstorms.
