Not a Speckled Wood

This is not a speckled wood. I was thinking it looked more like the familiar crescent. Not sure which particular species of crescent, though.

Re: Not a Speckled Wood

Thanks for the correction. I've not found anything that looks just like it on the web. There is a wide variety in patterns in the various Crescent subspecies, but that looks the closest to it that I've seen so far.

Re: Not a Speckled Wood

After doing some further research, it appears to be in the Fritillary family. I think it is the female Great Basin Fritillary.

A Great Basin Fritillary

Indeed, I think you've got it. Nice sleuthing. I note your link says "no record" for outside of the blue area. Well, your picture is the new record. You might consider contacting them about your range expansion discovery.

Re: A Great Basin Fritillary

Thanks, that's a great idea. I sent them an email. I'll post a reply when I hear from back them.

Re: A Great Basin Fritillary

The experts tell me that this butterfly is a Great Spangled Fritillary, and this is within its normal range. Looks right to me now that I've seen the photo.
