Powerline Trail  Sucess!

My last Gorge summit and a lot more fun in winter than I expected. We found several moderate snow slopes to mess around on and enjoyed good cliff top views. The trip into the old growth down in the basin was welcome after seeing clear cuts and powerlines at the beginning of the day.

This is one of the only places in the gorge where I have been abel to find solitude on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Easy climb, and a dissapointing summit... however the cliffs a half a mile or so past the summit made the trip well worth it. While resting at the cliffs, it began to hail on us. Hail... in April... what the hail is that all about???

Route Climbed: NW Ridge Date Climbed: Dec 27, 2004  Sucess!

Drove all the way up to the four-way intersection of logging roads just west/northwest of Greenleaf then made our way up from there to the summit. Also dropped on down the southeast ridge (pretty bushwacky in spots) to check out the cool cliffs above the Red Bluffs. Quite a bit of snow on top but the roads getting in were rough but clear.

Since I was caught up on homework and had a day off, I decided to give this peak a shot. Pretty easy hike to the summit. I saw some minor activity on St Helens while at the top, and watched the cloud slowly dissipate. It was interesting to see how dirty the snow was on St Helens compared to the other big peaks. It was also an interesting coincidence to meet up with the maintainer of this page on the way up.

After this one, I still had some daylight, and hiked Wind Mountain.

Some things that came to me during this hike.

-The road in sucks. Don't pick your nose while on CG2020 or you take your life in your hands.

-All ninjas are mammals.

-Ronald McDonald rules the world from his rainbow Volkswagen hidden in the past.

-Third Eye Blind's third album is a disappointment.

I've wondered about this one for years and finally went up there to find a way in. Weather sucked, spitting rain, wind, but with a few sunbreaks. Fall foliage is at its peak so that helped make up for the weather. This is one I'll be back to soon to give a more thorough exploration.
