Sterling Hiker,

That is pretty much what I said. As backcountry usage increases more and more permits are required. You can still enter the park and climb Gregory Bald without a fee or permit. Check with the number that is listed for the most updated info.

The Park Service requires that you fill out a backcountry permit for any overnight stay at any of the park's backcountry campsites. In addition, there are certain sites, such as #13 Sheep Pen Gap, that are rationed and therefore require a reservation.

Free permits are required for overnight stays in the park, and you must stay in a designated campsite. Those sites with a usage limit will require you to have a reservation number if space is available. It is best to contact the park service for the latest requirements.

The road will remain closed through 2005, but there is hope that it will be re-opened in the future

The most beautiful time of the year for Gregory is the middle of June. The flame azaleas are just knockout, pick your color and it is there. I am no flower buff but I love the color and the beauty that they lend to the great pleasure of a 'walk in the woods'.
