I have hiked this many times, it is my favorite day hike out of Fort Collins. My dog loves the scrambling near the top.

The Rock
1st climbed in '98 with my 14 year-old son, many times since. A nice hike and climb. Best time from Sep thru May. Rattlesnakes can be an issue as well as poison ivy down low in the summer. Small pond on top can provide pumpable water. Every time I climb it I think about the boy that disappeared from the trail near the top back in the 70's.

I really enjoy climbing here. The rock is fantastic granite and there are rarely any crowds. Ihave yet to try the bolted lines on the formation but I'm sure that will happen in the not too distant future. Nice summit. It has a bit of an alpine feel to it, similar to the Piz Baddile (sp?).

Matt and I calculated that we covered a total of about 7 miles and 2,300 vertical in 3 hours car to car. We took the longer meadows route on the way down to get some added distance!! Soloing the face is a blast! For a good combo trip check out the Cliff Jumping!

It was a fine sunny day but not too hot. There is very nice rock on this summit, good for scrambling or more serious routes. Look out for poison ivy on the lower parts of the trail. This was my first summit of the year.

A great place for a hike, especially spring and fall. Lots of wildlife, great birding, flowers. There are even some rocks to clamber around. One of the best little mountains around.
The secret route: if you approach Greyrock from the Meadows (west of the rock) , instead of taking the main trail, there is a great 4th class route to the top. Just head for the rock, and follow the path of least resistance. I've only done it once, I'm not sure I can find it again, but its there.

South RidgeTotal ascents = 5. First time up the South Ridge, fun scramble with a few 5th class moves. Other ascents via the trail.
