East tag from the South Loop trail...yet not quite as easy on day 4 of my trip though. Very busy summit by the number of log entries. View to Mummy Mtn is spectacular.
Came up the South Loop and made Griffith in a little over two hours from the TH. 108 in Vegas and I was wearing my coat while I sat and had a snack on the summit. The Spring Mountains are cool, get it..cool :)
Enjoyed perfect weather and just a hint of snow on my 12 mile run.
Seemed harder today, snow on south loop trail towards top, not a lot but enough. You must negotiate it ... Also it's a scramble to peak as lots of snow on trail..
Wow, it was LOVE at first sight with the Spring Mountains for me. I LOVE this place and cannot wait to get back. Charleston was Plan A, but there was an INCREDIBLE ammount of snow in the trees up higher. I got to the ridge, saw a clear shot up Griffith, and visited that summit, instead. A lot of folks turned around / didn't make it, but I did run into one local up there who was smart enough (unlike me) have his ice ax for the steep stuff. I delighted in the sheer limestone cliffs and was just amazed by the violence of the avy chute - splintered trees, rocks, etc. No doubt when that chute releases, it roars. Now I have an excuse to come back to visit Charleston!
Great views! Hiked from Harris Springs, snow the last mile or so.
The approach from Harris Peak gives a great staircase. And the approach from Southern loop has fun switchbacks.
Did Mummy first from trail canyon, then Charleston, then Griffith. Griffith might have the best views of Vegas. We summited at about 5pm, and wished we could camp there to see the view at night. Maybe next time.
My girlfriend, roommate, and myself went up the south loop for a quick day hike. The aspen's were changing to their fall colors so it was quite pretty.
Four of us did a two car hike from Harris Springs to Cathedral Rock trailhead. I liked the part of the trail constructed through the cliffs above the pass. The temp in Las Vegas was 107 and around 65 on top of the ridge. We hiked to Harris Mountain and Griffith Peak and it turned out to be a fun day.
2nd time doing this peak, cooler weather today with cloud cover, lots of hikers up there today, clouds on top of peak.
Next time need to try for 3 peaks!
Hiked Griffth Peak from North/South Loop, Harris Springs and Rainbow Canyon.
Got there on easy single peak hike, 3 peaks, 4 peaks, 5 peaks (Harris, Griffth, Charleston, Mummy & Fletcher), Snowshoe backpacking etc...
My best lap to this peak from South Loop Trail Head is 1 hour 37 minutes.
Started at Harris Springs trailhead. Tagged Charleston Peak and Griffith Peak.
Have been up Griffith a few times. Good peak.
Up and down in 5 hours. Nice little trek.
Hiked with Mommy and Daddy from the Griffith Peak trailhead. Daddy carried me, of course, because I am not yet 9 1/2 months old.
Awesome late spring hike with a friend. Great views from the summit and a relaxing day in the mountains. Cool temps fooled me into a wicked sunburn though, I keep forgetting that just because it's not hot out doesn't mean the sun is not there.
THE SPECIAL THING ABOUT THIS PEAK IS THAT I CAN SEE IT FROM MY HOME. CLIMBED FROM HARRIS SPRINGS ROAD SEVERAL TIMES. FROM THE S LOOP A FEW TIMES. UP ECHO CANYON ON CRAMPONS ONE WINTER. USUALLY AS PART OF A LOOP OVER CHARLESTON STARTING UP TRAIL CANYON. OTHER SUMMIT DATES INCLUDE: 6/7/01 6/1/02 6/14/02 5/24/03 7/19/03 5/22/04 6/14/04 6/9/05 8/2/06 6/15/06 7/1/07 7/11/07 7/18/07 9/6/07 9/12/07 8/8/09 3/21/10 7/13/11
Stopped at Griffith because I started around noon from the south loop trail and hoped to summit Charleston (my original goal). It worked out the I bagged 2 summits that day--Griffith and Charleston.
