Trip Report: http://www.100summits.com/trip-reports/item/252-grizzly-peak
First time was a linkup of Grizzly and Garfield. Second time was a ski descent (and subsequent yard sale) on the Grizzly Couloir.
Quick PM hike breaking up a long drive south. The page complains about a loose chute, but I found pleasant travel on a right-to-left ascending grassy ledge. Trip report.
Snow climb up and down Grizzly Couloir with Natalia. Managed to get back to the car before rain started. Nice approach hike, great views.
7/30/20166 - Standard route with Garfield.
Fun Tour De Grizzly: loop from Grizzly Couloir, then down the West Face.
6/24/06 - Standard route with Garfield.
6/21/08 - Climbed from east side of Indy Pass winter closure, traversed to "Mountain Boy Peak" afterwards.
3/13/16 - Winter ascent of the standard route via McNasser Gulch in late May-like conditions. Started at the La Plata TH. The south facing slopes leading to the east ridge were holding more snow than expected. This is certainly not a good route choice during "normal" winter conditions.
Lovely day, up via Grizzly Couloir and down via West Slopes. Couloir had lots of deep snow, we did not need crampons or axes, only booted up with trekking poles.
June 21, 2008 with Jamie, Jamie and Steve via Grizzly Couloir with traverse to Garfield.
June 14, 2015 with Brian, Brian and Elliot via Grizzly Couloir with ski descent.
Tried the Grizzly couloir. Got weathered off the mountain near the top of the couloir and had to retreat.
climbed the great, grizzly couloir with mike, jamie and steve. the shade was comfortable, but i was burning up while ascending the couloir's sunny sections. traverse to garfield was a rocky hop.
I enjoyed spending some time on the summit alone, except for a visit from a mountain goat. I ascended from the northeast ridge (from Independence Pass) and then descended the north ridge to Grizzly reservoir. It was a long & fun day.
CO MTNS trip
Climbed Grizzly then Garfield, many large rocks let loose above me on descent & had to duck behind obstacles to stay alive!
With Megan, 13. What a difference a few feet make... If this were a 14-er, it would be overrun. Because it isn't (quite), it's gloriously unfrequented. Up directly above the mine to maximize our time spent on the ridge... Toured round to Garfield and then back down in to McNasser Gulch (a particularly lovely basin, imo).
June 26 2016 with Ryan Draft. The reason for a second entry is to advertise a SUPERB ROUTE, inspired by BLong's entry on this page: parked at Indie Pass, and simply headed over the ridges. One slightly tricky segment coming off Igloo Pk (Pt 13,060) en route to Mountain Boy Pk (Pt 13,198) can be avoided by dropping off to the S. Went on to Garfield and walked out to the La Plata trailhead on the McNassar Gulch road. Not easy getting a lift up to Indie Pass. https://goo.gl/photos/AJZotWyJQ8WteXcq5
From the 2wd, ascended the East Ridge (long before the route on Matt's photo. It sounds like he had a horrible experience. It wasn't so bad for us - just steep.) Stayed on the ridge more, which gave us a bit of nice scrambling (above 2+). Traversed to Garfield and back down to the NE. Nicer weather than expected. Solid group of climbers (Nancy, Taylor, Jason, and me).
Climbed East Ridge before heading over to Garfield. Nice day, plenty of deer. No one else around. Nice views of the Elks.
Via McNasser Gulch...climbed east ridge of Grizzly and traversed to Garfield. Nice glissade down Garfield
With Garfield Peak.
Nice hike, a bit loose going up to the ridge. Once on the ridge it was easy going. We traversed towards Ouray, however ended up needing to bail which made for a shaky descent.
