The Grosse Reisseck is the main mountain of the Reisseckgroup in the Hohe Tauern. The group is situated in the south of the more famous Ankogelgroup and isn't with 2965 meters as high as the nothern neighbour. That mains also that it's for more people possible to climb it. But don't underestimate this group because it exist out of steep and big wild rocks. The climb itself is most done from the Reisseck Railway that brings you till 2245 meter. That makes also that many people try to climb it without the nessesary respect, and know-how. But with a bit of fisycal codition and good footwear is it for some tourist possible to reach the summit.
After taking the Reisseck-train till the end station it's about a 3h 1/2 climb, over in the beginning nice path, and at the end steep and slipy rock. Once your on the summit you have a beautiful view over the Hohe Tauern region. In the main season June till September are lots of people trying to climb this mountain only a view from this group do reach the summit.

Getting There

By car :

Driving on the highway Villach/Salzburg you have to take the exit Lienz/Millstat/Lendorf that's at the north of Spitall. Then you have to drive in the direction of Lienz and after 8Km you have to follow the marks "Grossglockner" and "Möllbrücke" Now you're driving through the Mölltal, you're passing some village as there are Möllbrucke and Mühldorf. After 20Km you will drive into the village Kolbnitz where the Reisseck trainway started. It's on the right side if you driving from Mühldorf. There are marks a view Km before you're there.

If you're coming from Lienz just follow the marks Mallnitz, but don't turn of the mainway when you're in Obervellach. Just follow the way to Spittal untill you are in Kolbnitz, the trainway is then on youre left side.

By Train:

Take a IC train till Mallnitz or Spittal or Lienz, from there it goes with locale trains till the railway station in Kolbnitz, witch is 500 meter from the start of the Mountain Railway Reisseck.

When To Climb

Summertime is it the easiest way to get to the summit cause then you can use the Reisseck Trainway.
For the die-hard fans is it possible to climb this mountain the hole year through. (But you will have to use the Moos Hütte, cause it could be that you need more than 1 day)

There's a camping in Kolbnitz.

There are many huts at the end of the Reisseckbahn where you can spend the night (3 I believe but I'm not sure about that)

There is a hut at the feet of the mountain. the Moos Hütte it lays at the west side of the mountain on2320 meter. But you have to know that this hut is a self-care hut and that you have to ask the key in the Oeav bureau of Spittal. So when you're going to spend the night there take food and drinks with you. (I was there and didn't have the key, so be aware of this)

Corrected Overview

Hey there! Ich finde der Text im overview könnte etwas Korrektur vertragen. Ich hab mir mal erlaubt das zu machen. The "Großes Reisseck" is the highest mountain and name-giver of the Reisseckgroup in the Hohe Tauern. The group is situated in the south of the more famous Ankogelgroup. The Reißeck, with it's 2965m Peak is lower than most of the Ankogelgroup Peaks. Because of the lower height, many underestimate this mountain, but it is actually more demanding because of steep and big rocks. The climb itself is mostly started from the Reißeck Railway which brings you up to 2245 meter. Because of the short distance to the top many people try to climb it without the necessary respect and know-how. Tourists will need a bit of physical condition and good footwear to reach the summit. After taking the Reisseck-train up until the end station it is about a 3.5 hour climb, which starts out as a nice and easy path but turns into steep and slippy rock towards the end. Once you are on the summit you can enjoy a beautiful view over the Hohe Tauern region. In the main season, from June to September, lots of people are trying to climb this mountain, but many underestimate the mountain and only a few do reach the summit. Lg, Tom

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
