Guadalupe Peak via trailhead at Pines Springs  Sucess!

Started at sunrise to avoid the heat. First 1,000 feet of the climb in the sun. Beautiful morning. I saw no one else on the way to the summit. I know my camera backpack got heavy before getting there. Beautiful spot. I will return.

Holy Cow!  Sucess!

Texas! The best hike I ever done yet. Just a GREAT time, I'll always cherish. Went when the sun was rising, so it was just awesome in the dawn light. I can't imagine hiking this in the midday heat. But as I was going down from the top, which I had to myself, I saw a lot of people heading up. Not a cloud in the sky and like no winds!

Hiked this up and down in 5-6 hours with my 11-year-old daughter, Jackie. Beautiful weather during the hike. As we left the park, a rain storm hit and made us glad we were off the mountain.

Very windy at first, but luckily the wind died down and it turned into a nice day. Great views of Sierra Blanca and the surrounding salt flats.

Standard route  Sucess!

Climbed with Kimberly and her dad. Nice and easy 2-hour hike to the summit. The summit register was amusing; people dedicating their hike to wives, kids, or Jesus. Compare it to some technical summits in California, where people try to outdo each other with short entries. My photos are here.

Good New Year  Sucess!

Tallest peak in TX on the first day of they year sounded like a good thing to do :-). Not a hard climb, really really windy but enjoyed it. Awesome views over the desert.

My wife Lana and I celebrated our 28th anniversary by hiking up to the top of Texas. We couldn't have asked for better weather. Temps in the 50's, and a very light NE wind which is almost unheard of for the area.

It was a bright sunny day, but the previous day had seen substantial snow and high winds. There was still 4" of snow on the shaded portions of the trail above 7000'. We reached the summit with many others that day and had a spectacular view all around.

A snow capped Sierra Blanca was visible to the north and the drop-off to the west was breathtaking. Going down was much more difficult with the slick, melting snow on steeper portions of the trail. I think we all fell on our rear-ends at least once. We spotted numerous mule deer near the bottom that evening as we completed our hike.

We summitted the highest peak in Texas after getting a noon start from Pine Springs. We made our way to the backcountry Guadalupe peak campground and set up camp. We didn't rest long and hurried on to make the summit right at sunset. We Returned to thecampground after dark and descended the mountain the next morning.

Beautiful climb. Was worried about the temp -- high reached only about 75 with a nice breeze. Left just before sun came up -- 5 hrs up, 2 down. Thousands of ladybugs - many in clusters - at 8,500' or so up to the top. Great weather, incredible views. Well worth the trip from Houston. Saw about 15 other people at various stages of going up / down on the mountain. Drank LOTS of water and some gator-aid. Will do again when kids get older. Will never forget it.
