Best high point climb so far. I arrived about 4:30 pm with clouds over the mountains. The ranger told me I was starting a little late and to turn around if I saw lightning. I reached the top with high winds and black clouds above me, but sun shining in the valleys around the mountain. Incredible site. Fortunately the clouds never let loose, but on the descent there was quite a light show of cloud to cloud lightning.
Was up on top just as three Black Hawk helicopters flew over El Capitan - below me. Also saw one of the biggest rattlesnakes slowly making his way across the trail in the woods near the top.

No View From Top
Very windy and cold. Snow level was down to about 5500 feet from a storm the day before. It was suppose to be clear but clouds hung around until sunset...well after leaving the summit. Nothing to see at the top besides some rime and clouds. Spent about 15 minutes at the top hoping for a clearing but nothing of the sort came and it's not exactly comfortable either with the winds (and that pyramid doesn't make too good for a wind break!). Passed one group on the way up and no one on the way down.

Via Guadalupe Peak with El Capitan
It was pleasant enough to reach this summit, though the real prize of the day was El Capitan. After some photos and a snack on the summit of Guad, we began the steep descent to the saddle with El Cap. My heart goes out to those who sit on Guad's summit and only admire El Capitan from a distance.

Guadalupe Peak
We had perfect weather for the hike up Guadalupe Peak. It was breezy but not too windy. I had planned a trip to the Guadalupe Mountains and Big Bend for a while. Finally had the opportunity to go and thought this was a great hike.

Training for Mt Rainier
In the spring of 2008 I hiked up Guadalupe Peak every weekend with 40 - 50 lbs, training for Mt Rainier... it worked! I had a great time on that mountain.

My 40th State Highpoint!
There is an old saying that "everything is big in Texas", so I guess it is appropriate this was the site of my 40th State Highpoint reached. Gorgeous scenery and great weather (minus the wind!) at the summit. I was the first one on the summit that day, but passed MANY people on the way down. Perhaps the trail should be renamed the "Guadalupe Peak Superhighway".
...that I'll ever do. But a fun one nevertheless. I hiked up solo when I was in the area working on the Lonely Planet Texas guide. Texas is an odd place...much of it doesn't appeal to me at all, but a few select places are some of my favorites on earth. This is one.

Guadalupe Peak
Nice hike with great views and weather. Met a former major league baseball player on the trail and some other fun people. Went to Carlsbad Caverns in the evening and watched the bats leave the cave. Toured the caverns the next day and then drove on to Wheeler Peak. HP #38

Amazing View
A beautiful hike to the top of Texas! Looking down on the west Texas plains on the top is unforgettable, especially with El Capitan jutting out on the southeast. Big Bend is my favorite spot in TX but I need to get back and explore a little more in the Guadalupes!

Quad
Finally did a Quad... Now, shooting for six loops in one day for November 2009...if all goes well. My way of celebrating my 60th year.
First climb time: 1 hour 50 minutes
loop time: 3 hours 6 minutes
total net time out on the trail and food breaks, start to finish: 3:45am 'till 6:38pm: 14 hours and 53 minutes
34 miles, 12,000 feet of up... 12,000 feet of down

Wonderfull Mountain
This Mountain highhandedly made me like TX. Amazing view and great hike. This was my very first high peak I hiked.

Fun, easy hike with great views!
Drove out from Lubbock. Fun stuff, not particularly steep or challenging, but great views and the wind was low for me. Always good to get a highpoint. The real beast was bushwacking to El Cap...

Not as fast as Alan...but had a great time anyway. 4 hours rt and dawdled on the way back. Just as beautiful as the first time I climbed it with our kids.

Happy New Year!
After getting off from work, drove from Austin to Guadalupe Mtns NP, and slept in the cab of my truck. Got on the trail at 4:30 AM just in time for sunrise at the summit.
