The Guadalupe Traverse is a class 2 off-trail bushwhacking route from the Guadalupe Peak Trail to the summit of El Capitan. Although it's entirely off-trail, it's the easiest route to the summit of El Capitan, and many sections are well-worn social trails. Do not attempt this route unless you have experience scrambling, bushwhacking, and routefinding on difficult terrain.
Follow the Guadalupe Peak Trail to approximately 8500', then drop into the easternmost gulley and follow it down to approximately 8040'. Bushwhack to the west and gain the west ridge of El Capitan. Follow this ridge to the summit. Use extreme caution near the edge of the ridge! It's a shear drop of over 1000' to desert floor below.
Bring trekking poles, a headlamp, and plenty of food/water/electrolytes. Snake gaiters are also advisable.
