"As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."

Rucu Pichincha 4696mClimbed from the Telefirico up to the summit. The summit part is a bit tricky due to the loose debris. I saw many people struggling to get up to be honest. Also rainy conditions at the top and no visibility. Weather changes rapidly here.
I went down "trailrunning" style, because my girlfriend was waiting at the Teleferico.
Interesting to be at "Monte Rosa altitude" on hiking shoes.

Short afternoon páramo loopI wanted to summit Rucu when I was in Quito, but the weather was very foggy, and rainy in the afternoons. I had already given up when on my last afternoon I saw that it had cleared up. So I changed clothes, packed my stuff and took the cable car.
It was already past 4 PM when I arrived at the upper station, so summitting was already ruled out. I made a 3 hour wildlife watching hike, up to around 4200 m a.s.l. on a side path and returning on the standard trail. The scenery was beautiful, and I could photograph rabbits, birds and the native páramo flora. The weather conditions change rapidly, though, as they do in most of Ecuador. Summitting involves planning, a flexible agenda and also lots of luck, at least this time of the year

Rucu via Teleferiqo & classic routeI struggled because of a bad acclimatization but made it to the top from Teleferiqo then following the normal route. The top was in the clouds but it was an awesome hike with great views to Quito.

Fell a little short.Came from sea level the day before and I turned around about 350 feet short as I was moving very slowly and had 3 peaks in a row ahead of me. We took the cable car up. Fun hike.

Rucu PichinchaI had no real intention of making this climb, I took the teleferico to 3950 metres with the intention of taking it easy and maybe only going to one of the view points. Made it to the summit in 3 hours, complete mist at the summit but still worth it. The scramble to the top on the west side was very reminiscent of Pen-y-ghent in the Yorkshire Dales, UK. If you had the time, it would be worth doing all 3 summits.

GuaGua via RucuTook the first teleferiQo at 9am to the top, then hiked up to Rucu (2.5hrs, easy). I continued on to GuaGua while Yaz, my hiking partner, descended. Reached the summit of GuaGua at 2:15pm, the last section before the top was very steep on loose scree. No views, summits shrouded in cloud. Descended by the same route to the teleferiQo, only bypassing Rucu's summit on the way down. Got caught in a torrential downpour, so ended up running quite a bit, I reached the teleferiQo at 5pm. From the bottom of the teleferiQo I walked a further 20mins to the highway & took a taxi into the centre of Quito for just $3.50.

Rucu via TelefericoStarted this solo, but tagged along with other climbers on the way. Avoided ascending the scree by scrambling up a route to the left of the scree.

QuitoThe Pichincha massif looks very impressive wrapping around the valley of Quito. Nice hike most of the way, with a bit of scrambling the last 2-300 feet. Nice acclimatization climb.

Rucu via TeleféricoWe hiked up from the Teleférico at 1145, a bit of a late start. Cloudy with patches of sun. We started on the rock a few hundred feet past the first cave on the left, and gained the ridge very early, at which point the fog was preventing visibility past 15'. Some interesting routefinding challenges, but we made it up by 2:30, and descended via the standard route with some snow. Great time!
