Most drive up  Sucess!

Mostly a drive up, "hiked" the final walkway to the wind shelter. Sadly it was clouded in and no views were to be had.

Sunrise  Sucess!

Drove up to the summit after watching the sunrise atop Pa Ka'oao. Beautiful views of the crater Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and Maui. Avoided the crowds by hiking the short .2 mile trail from the visitor center to Pa Ka'oao.

Couple trips  Sucess!

"Climbed" once with the help of a car and most recently ran over the rim along the Halemau'u trail around a couple cinder cones to nearly the Kapalaoa hut and back as a trail run. Wanted to climb up the Kaupo Gap from the south to the summit and back to the beach, but the weather forecast was not favorable. I guess I'll know this mountain very well after that happens. Fun and interesting place to visit.

Mountain of many colors  Sucess!

Drove up for sunrise, traipsed up Huluhulu, and walked the Sliding Sands. Fantastic weather. The Hosmer Grove and deeper crater areas still intrigue me...

Stargazing and Sunrise Watching  Sucess!

We arrived at the Maui airport super-late, and were driving up the slopes of Haleakala soon after. We car-camped for a few hours at the visitor center, before heading to the summit shortly after 3:30 AM. Once at the summit, we waited with eager anticipation (along with dozens of other people) for the sunrise. The summit road got closed due to the amount of people, and we could see the visitor center was over-crowded, as well. It was a great experience, and we spent the rest of the day driving the West Maui loop... which has an interesting 8-mile stretch of "narrow winding road."

Sunset  Sucess!

We drove up on New Years Eve, but in white out conditions and saw nothing. We returned on 1/3 when conditions were clear for the sunset. Awesome views but very crowded.

Surreal  Sucess!

Spent a bit of time on the mountain, mostly backpacking down the Sliding Sands trail from the summit area, camping at Paliku, camping at Holua and then up the Halemau'u trail. Weather ranged from gorgeous to horrendous, hardly saw anyone and had a great time overall.

Sea to Summit to Sea  Sucess!

Did the Sea to Summit then back to the Sea hike via the Kaupo Gap Trail. Deb and I touched the sea, down by the Mokulau church at 3:22am and finished at the same place that night at 10:30pm. The lower Kaupo Gap trail is trash. it lies on private ranch land and is the responsibility of the ranch to maintain....and they don't. This tail doesn't get enough use to maintain itself. Even though we reconed the lower trail the day before, we still had issues coming back down in the dark. We made it though, so all is good. Because of a rare storm a couple of days before, that dumped snow at the summit, the summit was closed and we had it to ourselves. We never saw another person all day, until we hit the summit, where there was a ranger getting ready to open the park.

After the sunrise, I hiked down into the crater to somewhere around 6000', give or take, then hiked back up and out.

Honeymoon!  Sucess!

My new wife and I went to Maui for the honeymoon, so we did the Haleakala sunset. We also did a small hike into the crater. I wish that I had my road bike with me for the ride back down.

Long hike from the parking lot  Sucess!

My wife and I drove up Haleakala at 2:00 am to watch the sunrise over the crater, which was spectacular. Reaching the summit wasn't the primary goal, and the only "hiking" we did was from the parking lot to the observation area, but it was a fabulous excursion.
