Drive up  Sucess!

One of about a couple thousand other successful summit bids that occured that day. I owe it all to the tenacity and fortitude of my rented chevy malibu.

Da Road  Sucess!

Tough summit in our rented HHR. Very cool mountain and Island though. Drove up for sunset after a hard day of snorkling. Came back a few days later and explored the crater a bit more

What a great place  Sucess!

My first trip to Hawaii, on my honeymoon, we made the drive up to the top. We stuck around and watched the sunset since my wife wasn't too interested in being cold and crowded for the sunrise. From what I could tell it was every bit as nice as the sunrise. I was very impressed and I'm pretty sure she was too.

Sliding Sands Trail  Sucess!

Very cold at the top. Bring warm jackets for the sunrise. Temp was around 40, the beach was 78 at 3:00 am. It will take 1:45 to drive there from Wialea. The views from the top are great. The hike into the crater is OK, but I would not do it again. The views are better from the top. The trail is littered with horse manure. There are great photo opportunities everywhere. One bit of advice for people trying to get sunrise pics...turn off the flash, it won't reach. There are crowds of people at the top for sunrise but as soon as the sun is up, the place empties out. I am also glad I did not take the bike ride down. The bikes seem like flimsy BMX bikes and they go really slow (I am sure for safety reasons). Do it once while you are in Maui, then go enjoy the rest of the island.

Nice drive.

I camped on the Mountain with my wife Jackie and daughter Megan and managed to see 3 of the endemic Honey Creepers.

Hitched a ride up to summit with rented mtn. bikes. Rode bikes back down to main hyw and then rode left for a number of miles to a winery. Highly recommend biking down!

Drove to the top for the great views, enjoyed nearby Sliding Sands Trail. If you want to try a fun experiment buy a bag of chips before starting up the road...don't open them and then wait and see if they explode when you reach the summit parking lot. It worked both times we visited :-) Natural Born Hikers

Route Climbed: drive to the top Date Climbed: March 5, 2005  Sucess!

Drove to the top to catch the sunrise. Cold with 20 - 30 mph winds at the ranger station and about 35 degrees F. Sunrise over the ocean was shrouded by a cloud cover, but views of the crater were excellent. Having never been there before, I didn't realize how deep and vast the Haleakala crater is and to see it appear from darkness to morning light was a beautiful sight. Biked downhill through Makawao and Paia before reaching the beach on the North shore. Aaahh, 80 degrees again! I must come back to hike the crater.

Nice drive to the top. Very unique landscape--my first volcano and first time on a peak over 10,000 feet. Mauna Loa & Mauna Kea on Hawaii were both visible from the top. Great view!

First ever Marathon-Maui. Flew family and employees out to cheer us on. While they are hit the beach afterwards, we hit the mts. I just can't do the beach scene mannnnn (Dennis Hopper variety).

It's a cool feeling being at the highest point on an island like Maui.

Early start. Chilly at the summit. Amazing Sunrise!

After sunrise I climbed down into the crater for the Halemauu Trail (incredible day hike).

Got up at 2:30 a.m. to catch the van ride to the summit for the sunrise which was a scenic mixture of clouds and clear views. Well worth the experience. Did the 3-4 hour bike ride from summit to beach. Not the most strenuous hike/climb, but certainly one of the most memorable.

Beautiful and windy summit after an interesting drive up. Did a little bit of walking in the crater, would love to do more exploring up there!

Drove up the road and started at the top and went all the way to the end of the valley at Paliku cabin. Great workout and awesome views. About 19 miles and 3,700' vertical. Man, it's tough to run in loose sand!

Route Climbed: The Road Date Climbed: July 2003  Sucess!

Drove to the roads end to witness the sunrise with the crowds. It was rainy, windy and cold. Just at sunrise the clouds actully lowered just enough so the entire summit area enjoyed fantastic views. It was incredable. Then I hiked down the Sliding Sands trial to the crater bottom passing the KaKu'oka'Oo and Pu'uoPele craters. I walked all the way to the Halemau'u trail junction, nearly to the Kipahulu Gap. On my return hike out I took the Halemau'u trail all the way back to the Haleakala Hwy. The weather was perfect inside the crater but once I was back up on the road it was pouring rain. I ended up hitching a ride after walking up the road for about a mile in the wet weather.
