Half Dome Cables  Sucess!

Beautiful hike on a beautiful day. Good practice run for the Whitney Main Trail. Met lots of nice people along the way, though I'm glad we got an early start (5:30 am), so we hit the cables before the crowd. The cables were not as daunting as I had feared.

My first backpacking trip

Hiked from the village to Cloud's Rest to spend the night, then over to Half Dome and back to the village. I had rock climbed quite a bit before, but after this trip, I became completely addicted to the outdoors!

Snake Dike  Sucess!

Climbed Snake Dike with my friend Jason on my 21st birthday. Went down the Cables Route. Had my first legal beer in the bar at the Yosemite Lodge that night.

Day hike  Sucess!

Took a side trip to Clarks Point, watched a Grouse and her 4 chicks. Took excellent pics of the back side of Half Dome. Ascended with no trouble for a nice lunch by 11am. Stopped above Nevada Falls for a cold drink and a cold dip in the water. Arrived back in Curry Village with a very unpleasant left knee. Other than that it was a great day.

Half Dome from Happy Isles  Sucess!

Hiked w/ roommate and his co-workers, started at first light (camped in Yosemite Valley) and a lot of people were already on the trail. Got to the summit a little after noon. Went up the cables (used garden gloves from Home Depot, I would recommend a pair that fits snug and has a good grip, not garden gloves!!!). The summit was great, but the cables were jam-packed. I would recommend starting earlier and getting to the cables before lunch to beat the crowd. Stopped to rest on the way down above Vernal Falls, lots of people were lounging and playing in the water. Great hike and unbelievable views!!!

Wee hours  Sucess!

I've been up Half Dome a couple of times and I have to say that starting the hike at 2am because there's no place to camp in the valley is the best way to do it. The best part is the looks you get from the people at the Curry Village bar when it's noon and you tell them you just got back from hiking Half Dome.

Detoured Day Hike  Sucess!

In 1996 a rockslide closed the Happy Isles trailhead. Wanting to fulfill a deep desire to hike Half Dome, I cobbled together a hike from Mono Meadows. Thinking it would be a stretch at 20 miles round trip, I began in the dark. I learned Illouette creek does not have a bridge. I did summit and finish in a stupor, where I learned that I had mis-added - and the true mileage was 30 miles. Ouch.

Snake route and normal route  Sucess!

Awesome Day out with Joseph - super light rack and half rope added some excitement!
Fun wow! I wonder if I would have dreamed of moving to Cali were it not for this roadtrip?
Did the cable route a couple times later when we lived in the bay area.

My used-to-be annual event  Sucess!

It used to be my annual event to hike up to Half Dome, until this year when I witnessed a Japanese hiker feel off the cable to his death. What a tragedy!

A Wild Day  Sucess!

Started hiking at 4 am to get to snake dike. We got off-route but got reset in the right direction. We finished the climb around 6:30 when the sun was setting. We booked it to the top but we were too late and couldn't find the cables in the dark. We huddled in a nest of pine needles until SAR got us at 1:30 am. We returned to camp at 5 am.

Scary!  Sucess!

I can't believe the park lets people go up this thing. I used climbing shoes, a harness, and clipped a daisy chain to the cables; I guess I know too much (not).

Foolishness  Sucess!

I have summited Half Dome many times including by moonlight. In the summer of 2006 I left the cables after climbing half way because the freezing rain was driving me from the slick granite. Well the gun-ho new father behind me didn't want to wait and with his toddler strapped to his back he moved outside the cables and on up the wet rock to the top. I am surprised more people don't fall.

Cable Route  Sucess!

Beautiful, if a little crowded trail with great views of the valley. Cables were fun to climb both up and down.
