My wife and I hiked up from the valley. When we got to the shoulder, we saw the cables were laying down for the winter season and the climb looked daunting. We about turned around when a lady at least 60 years old scurried down the cables and told us it was not as hard as it looked. With that, we each straddled a cable and pulled ourselves up. Even with the cables down, there were dozens of people on top. We spent a long time atop the iconic monolith soaking in the setting. We stumbled down the trail exhausted, in the dark, without lamps and very happy.
Went up on a weekday w/ my wife and Ben (6m old son) and our friends Megan (8m pregnant) and Jon. Should have seen the looks we got on the cables lugging up Ben. Crowds not too bad.
Busy saturday on the cables. Some bonehead was driving golf balls off the dome into Tenaya Canyon.
Beautiful day to climb Half Dome. The climb up took 3.5 hours starting at Curry Village. Those cables at the end are no joke.
Came up the easy side of Half Dome (well, harder than taking a chopper to the top, I s'pose), back in the summer of '92. Part of a farewell-to-the-US three-day hike from Tuolomne Meadows I did with my ex.
A long, crowded hike, but well worth it. It was funny to see what some people were wearing for a 16 mile hike. Some people definitely were not prepared. Bring a water filter! The cables were incredibly crowded so give yourself some extra time if you're doing this on the weekend.
My 11 year old son wanted to do this and we had a great heavy duty hike up the cables. Going back in the heat was hard on the knees for me. While I was ordering the promised victory pizza, my son fainted but was revived enough to enjoy it.
Summited via Snakedike and then down the cables. A long 16+ mile day but well worth it.
a good hike, shame about the concrete at base of the falls. Saw a bear and 3 cubs on descent- fantastic moment.
Fun, but long day and runout though.
first real hike with my Dad. Left in the dark, went up the regular route and up the cables. I'm hooked!
got up it in 4hrs 25 min, now id like to try and get it under 4hrs. knocked off 30 or so min from my last one.
Started at 4:30 am, took most of the day due to slower climbers in my group. Mist up, JMT down. Out of water for a couple miles until Nevada falls, those faucets there are realy great (and popular!). Can't wait to come back, Cloud's Rest next time...
I have climbed the peak multiple times before. But this trip was with friends. Much fun, despite the lack of sleep.
John Muir trail up, Mist trail down.
Left the parking lot at midnight, arrived on top around 5:30 a.m. We took a nice long break (45 minutes?) because we didn't want to arrive on top too soon and freeze ourselves before sunrise.
Sunrise was amazing. Highly recommended.
Took about as long to get down as it did to get up.
Suggestion for night hike: take JMT up (it's not as steep), Mist trail down (the waterfalls are absolutely amazing).
Cables twice, via Snake Dike once. No way to not have fun on this behemoth.
Hiked from Glacier Point, camped in Little Yosemite Valley. Ascended HD the next day and descended to Curry Village. Toughest hike yet. Trip Report
Cables route as a dayhike, made a loop - up on JMT, down on mist trail. Someone wigged out on the cables during the descent, making for a big traffic jam.
Cimbed the cables route.Left S.F. at 2am and returned at 11pm. Has to be the longest and dumbest day of my climbing life
NW Face, 1980.
First (climbing) trip to the Valley,I was sixteen, and climbed it with another 17 and 18 year old. My first wall. We had two of these new fangled things they called "Friends." All the rest was stoppers, hexes and youthful enthusiasm.
Snake Dike, the early '90s
Soloed it after a buddy and I go stormed off Mescalito and were on pout patrol. Next time I'll look at a top before leaving the rope at home.
My worst ascent was hiking up the cable to meet some friends on the NW Face and help them carry their gear down. I carried just a pack with two ropes and some gear but no sleeping bag, etc. Spent a long cold night on the summit only to find they bailed and day and a half earlier.
