Fantastic Hike
I went with my gf and her dad. She wasn't prepared for the extent of how physically demanding the hike was and overall it took us around 22 hours I believe. It is such a fantastic hike with great views. The cables are hair raising and worth the trip!

Snake Dike
First time to the top of Half Dome for me. Some serious run out on this route! Despite the run out, however, all the moves are there and the climbing was spectacular. The only downside was the hike which was actually very beautiful and went by rather quickly.

via the cable
Backpacked to LYV and day hiked to the top via the cable. Loved the cable - the funnest part of entire hike from TH. No traffic no jam on the cable; pleasantly surprised. Crowds factor on top of the dome was OK - expected but not too bad, maybe because it was Monday. Brought my Jetboil and enjoyed a cup of hot Thai tea. That was good. ;9
Next time it will be Snake Dike

Cables Down!
Cables were down, so we brought up harnesses and some rope just in case. Prusik knot held just fine, and we had the summit to ourselves while the sub-dome was packed with people!

Made it up early morning on the last day of a 7 day backpacking trip from Mammoth Lakes. View was very smoky due to fires to the south.

Cable Route
At 16 years old (1972), got caught on top in lightening storm with friends and some other hikers. Four (4) of the other hikers got struck, with one dying. I had a "come to Jesus" meeting right after the event.
Love the cables! hope to head back for Snakedike next year (2010)

Cables route
Left San Francisco around 9PM and drove all the way to the Yosemite park. Started hiking at 2:00am and went up Mist Trail. We saw some people coming back from God-knows-where. Thereafter the trail was empty until 7:00am. Hit the cables at 9:00am. Going up was fun but going down was an amazing blast despite the dozens of people jostling for space on that section of the trail. In total a 11-hour hike, with seemingly a million people on the trail in the afternoon!

A Must For All-Mist Trail up-John Muir Down
Left from Happy Isles parking at 0600 hrs with all The Usual Suspects. Took The Mist Trail up going up/past Vernal Falls and up to the top of Nevada Falls. The views are well worth the stairmaster work up this stretch. Shortley after this in Little Yosemite Valley is a prime spot to get more water from the Merced River. Kept churning up and reached the Stairs/North Face at 1100 hrs. Started the cables at 1130 but with quite a crowd. We were delayed for a while as there was a girl that was freaking out 3/4 up the cables to the summit. As she came past me going down I spread my arms across to catch her in the event of a fall as she did not look good (where the f*ck was her team), as her eyes looked possesed with fear.
That said we made the summit at 1200 hrs. Views were awesome of El Cap, Clouds Rest/ the valley looking down 4800 ft and taking pics at The Prow with..wow....a lot of air standing next to the edge with Yosemite Valley 4800 ft below (these Brits were sitting back from the edge of The Prow (which is the edge of the universe of the Half Dome Summit), messing with me during this moment). Actually, the only summit I felt relatively safe as the weather was perfect, not a cloud in the sky.
Of course the descent was painful (half our team took the Mist down, and we took the John Muir Trail down.. a little easier on the knees) but made it back to Happy Isles car/cold beers at 1735 hrs.
Yosemite is a magic place and should be visited by all. Just to be there, it is easy to understand John Muir's amazement at seeing this valley for the first time. Once again, Yosemite is a must see/explore/hike for all.
It is on everyone's list for good reason. An American experience.

Honeymoon
While on my honeymoon to Yosemite, I climbed this with my new wife. She had climbed a number of years previously. Started around 6:30am and were on top around 11:00. Were finished around 3:30. It was pretty tiring, after the stress of the wedding. Yet, it was fun, especially with climbing up the cables. We used the Mist Trail both up and down, which made for a lousy descent, since the trail was very steep and crowded with waterfall viewers.

One of the must-do USA hikes
Ascended via the Cables, with a 4:15am start. This is the way to go, to avoid all the crowds in the afternoon! On top just before 9am and back in the Valley at 1pm. Had a very nice afternoon lounging around over a pizza at Curry Village afterwards....
Overall, not that difficult of a hike; the Cables are pretty decent if you've had some scrambling/rock climbing experience.
