Grouse Gulch  Sucess!

We were on vacation in the area and decided to climb a 14er while we were there. Originally the plan was to climb Uncompahgre after driving over engineer pass but we realized near Animas Forks that the drive would be too long, so I checked the map and found the Grouse Gulch trail. We parked near Animas Forks and began to climb quite steeply for several miles, topping out on a 13000+ foot ridge, before promptly dropping 800+ feet to meet up with the American Basin Trail to the top. I believe our overall elevation gain was about 4000 feet, and it felt like it, but this is not a difficult mountain to climb. We cruised right up the American Basin Trail after joining it and summitted before 10 AM. Visibility was remarkably good, especially considering the fires going on nearby, so I was overall extremely satisfied with my first Colorado Fourteener - it certainly won't be my last! Grouse Gulch is a poor and relentless trail but I recommend it if you are looking to add a little extra challenge to your hike, and appreciate some solitude in gorgeous country along the way, we didn't see a soul until we met the main trail.

Thanks for a great time Colorado!

Weekend in San Juans  Sucess!

There was awesome weather in Boulder and I was working on Saturday. At one moment, I looked out, smelled the autumn air and could not resist. I took my car, bought food, put my gear in and drove to Grizzly Gulch. The beauty was breathtaking, all aspens were golden.

American Basin Adventure  Sucess!

Left Flagstaff at 6pm to do this. We got into Silverton around 1:45am Colorado time. We went up the wrong 110 due to a lack of map and went up to Hurricane Pass (yikes!!). Finally got up to Cinnamon Pass and to the American Basin TH by 4:15am and then just decided to go for the summit at that point. Got to the top by 6:30am and took a nap with sleeping bags in the grassy summit till 10am. The road to American Basin from Silverton is gnarly and require 4wd. We used it mulitple times. Pretty area!

via American Basin  Sucess!

After making it to the creek crossing near the TH with some careful driving in my compact, I hiked up the easy trail to the summit. A cold storm was approaching from the south and I got snowed on about halfway down. Saw ptarmigan along the trail.
