Tour de Grizzly  Sucess!

With Rachael. Went up the Grizzly Gulch trail but left early to go straight up the grass slopes to Whitecross, then traversed around over Handies and PT 13795 before descending back to the trial via a beautiful high tarn.

American Basin

Nice hike from American Basin. Puzzle of the day: How did the Mercedes-Benz coupe get to the upper (4WD) trailhead and back down again?!

Perfect weather for my second 14er  Sucess!

I hiked Handies after a successful summit of Sneffels the day before. Arrived in American Basin a little late and had to settle for a less-than-stellar camp spot. :) Started hiking before 7AM and made it back down by about 11:30AM. The weather was perfect, especially compared to foggy/misty conditions at Sneffels the previous day. http://udink.org/2016/07/07/mount-sneffels-and-handies-peak/

Handies  Sucess!

Kessler and I climbed Handies Peak with a group of 14ers.com members. We didn't start until after 9 am. We wanted to get over the mountains before it snowed, so we moved rather quickly. Kessler and I made the summit of Handies in one hour and 30 minutes. After a break on top, we were back at the vehicle in three hours. We drove over Cinnamon Pass and then to near Engineer Pass and then Ouray. We should have came down the road to Silverton since the road to Ouray was very rough and time consuming.

Via American Basin  Sucess!

On Sunday I hit the trail up towards Handies Peak at 7AM. The trail was easy to follow and I made my way to Sloan Lake by 8AM. From here it took me an hour to make the summit. Again, I had the summit to myself! I made it back to the trailhead by 10AM. Overall it was a great weekend and was much needed! Perfect weather both days too!

Via Grouse Gulch TH  Sucess!

Fun hike. We decided to save some wear and tear on our truck by not driving over Cinnamon Pass. We started a little lower and farther away at the Grouse Gulch TH. 4 miles and 4100 vert to the summit……3 hrs up and 3 hrs down. Our dog Yeti now has her first (and probably only) CO 14'er!!

Fun day with friends  Sucess!

Fun hike with friends from the Grizzly Gulch TH. Threatening weather chased us from the summit, but then it blew over with only a light sprinkle. Lots of mud, water, snow!

Nice Easy Hike  Sucess!

Cold front came in and dropped about an inch of snow. Low clouds were so thick I couldn't see more than about 20 feet. Cold and windy.

Grizzly Gulch and round over 13,795'  Sucess!

Occasional snow squalls (interspersed with periods of sunshine). Up Grizzly Gulch, on to the ridge between Handies and Whitecross (the trail's route was rather snowed up); on to Handies; and then staying high -- 13,735 to 13,795. A tricky segment (50' of class 3 down climb on very bad rock) coming off the top of 13,795, NE. Over 13,502, and then an easy descent to Lk 13,323 via a nice, gravelly slope just beyond the 13,502 top. Made for a fine round.

Climbed from Grizzly Gulch (beautiful route), thick fog in the low valley and clear, sunny conditions higher up made it even better!

Grouse Gulch  Sucess!

We were on vacation in the area and decided to climb a 14er while we were there. Originally the plan was to climb Uncompahgre after driving over engineer pass but we realized near Animas Forks that the drive would be too long, so I checked the map and found the Grouse Gulch trail. We parked near Animas Forks and began to climb quite steeply for several miles, topping out on a 13000+ foot ridge, before promptly dropping 800+ feet to meet up with the American Basin Trail to the top. I believe our overall elevation gain was about 4000 feet, and it felt like it, but this is not a difficult mountain to climb. We cruised right up the American Basin Trail after joining it and summitted before 10 AM. Visibility was remarkably good, especially considering the fires going on nearby, so I was overall extremely satisfied with my first Colorado Fourteener - it certainly won't be my last! Grouse Gulch is a poor and relentless trail but I recommend it if you are looking to add a little extra challenge to your hike, and appreciate some solitude in gorgeous country along the way, we didn't see a soul until we met the main trail.

Thanks for a great time Colorado!
