climbed from the grizzly gulch side. It was beautiful. I highly recommend this over the American Basin hike.
All I have to say is wow! Hiked from the American Basin and loved every second of it - just fantastic views in all directions for the entire hike!
Came up American Basin- beautiful and easy trail- good for lowlanders like me. The views from the top were amazing!
Second trip to the summit. Traversed over from American on decent snow. Great morning and great weather. The views from Handies' summit are definately some of the best.
climbed and skied with gahugafuga
Skinned to 12000' in American Basin, then kick-stepped up the west face on decent snow. Skied from the summit via the ascent route. On the way up, dropped my climbing helmet and watched it careen off a cliff and slide into the basin 1000' below. Miraculously found it with hardly a scratch on my way out.
The drive to the trailhead is as scenic as the hike itself. This was our 13th Fourteener in Colorado Rockies, but everything went well.
The slideshow from our adventure is here: Handies Peak hike
Started hiking around 11k. Went over a 13k pass descended down and then up Handies trail. It was a fun hike. Nothing compared to mount Whitney. Cloudy all day. Saw an 82 yr old about 30 meters from the summit. I wish I can do that when I am 80.
very scenic, not very interesting climbing
Hiked up the basin with shanahan96, he then headed over to Whitecross while I went up Handies. Stayed on or near the ridge crest from the Whitecross saddle, some interesting scrambling here. In combination with the knee deep snow some parts were very interesting. I descended the standard route which went really fast in the snow but would have been a real slog going up.
Wonderfully beautiful. About as easy as a 14'er can get. Trail run in a bit over an hour (if memory serves).
Beautiful mountain, great scenery, and got a Bi-Centennial as well! Definitely a good work out tagging UN 13,795 as well!
An easy 14er but things got gruelling on the way over to Point 13,795ft. Don't attempt both peaks on a single outing unless your seeking a great workout. It's a pretty LOOOng saddle! We were able to drive to the TH without any snow drifts blocking the way.
Made the summit during a rain shower with fog and sleet. Visibilty was less than 100 feet and I saw no other 14ners. Hey, thats part of the experience. 2nd 14ner
Awesome views - beautiful basin - driving to and from Lake City took as long as the entire hike!
Love it . I like the Grizzly creek round trip! American Basin is grat to look at though and someday I'd like to ski those coolies.
Beautiful hike through American Basin. Had the summit to ourselves for a few minutes. On the descent, went over and climbed Pt. 13,688 to get another perspective of Handies. Nice hike on a gorgeous morning!
Left at 4:30 AM so we could shoot sunset at Sloan Lake (see picture to be posted shortly in image gallery). Beautiful morning. Great hike to the top from Sloan Lake. Enjoyed the clear view (except for a fire in the Uncompaghre Wilderness) from the top for nearly an hour. Tundra in full bloom near the top. First, but not our last, 14er!
Traversed the ridge over to Whitecross Mt. The changing rock on the way over to Whitecross was fascinating. If I were a marmot, I think this would be a great basin to live in!
From Whitecross. Skied from the summit!
