Since we were camped by Animas Forks we decided to add another 3 miles to the hike up this mountain by taking the Grouse Gultch Trailhead. That was a mistake. Once you go up to the ridge at 13,090 you had to drop about 1000 feet into American Basin, then summit. Only take this route if your backpacking.
Climbed via the American Basin Route from the Lake San Cristobal Road. The flowers in the American Basin were astounding this time of year. The trail was in great shape although loose gravel made the final ascent to the summit a little more difficult. A great introductory hike to the San Juans.
nice hike with my son, great fourteener for families with children.
Awesome day; camped at American Basin. Several nice glissades on the way down.
Hiked up Handies via Grizzly Gulch Trail. Continued on the E ridge to UN 13,795, descended to the lake at 12,323 feet. Nice weather, great views!
5180 feet elevation gain/loss
7.5 hours CTC
Snow traverse head of American Basin
Quick run up the trail. Fun.
Very beautiful climb on the non-standard route.
First 14er, quite some time ago
Did it from American Basin, nice little hike. Wild Flowers were lovely, August 2006
After arriving in CO on the 5th and booking it to the San Juans, we made a quick ascent of Handies Peak on the 6th of July. The hike was very enjoyable, and Sloan Lake was still frozen over! Views were the best of any peak i have ever stoop on top of.
Hiked up Grizzly Gulch. Nice view of the San Juans!!
Celebrated 14er #50 for Jim and Karen with a nice loop hike. Went up Grizzly Gulch, traversed over to Whitecross and bushwacked down to the Cinnamon Pass Rd from Whitecross. American Basin side has better views.
Great sunrise over Redcloud Peak on the hike up through Grizzly Gulch. Cold and windy on top, but some of the best views I've seen from a summit!
#50!!!!! We had a fun celebration on the summit- great friends (thanks Kevin & Jeremy!), specially made t-shirts, mardi-gras beads, sparkling white grape juice in CO shot glasses, gummy bears, and a "50 bouquet!" It is SOOOO nice to finally be there! Loop hiked up Grizzly Gulch and down American Basin.
Third of 14 14ers in 11 days. Nice afternoon hike from American Basin after summiting Wetterhorn that morning.
From American Basin
Climbed Uncompahgre, Handies, and Wetterhorn on consecutive days from our Silver Spur Motel "base camp" in Lake City. The San Juans are amazing! Recommend high clearance 4wd for road to American Basin.
Took the rough way - Hardrock 100!
Climbed this peak as part of my Hardrock 100 pacing duties. Started at the base of Grouse Gulch, climbed up and over into American Basin, up the South ridge, then down into Grizzly Gulch. A decent amount of snow still clinging to American Basin, the Grizzly Gulch side was mostly snow free, beautiful sunrise.
