American Basin
Nell was home from NC and wanted to do a hike, so we camped out just below the trailhead. Couldn't have asked for a more gorgeous day! The wildflowers are probably the best I've ever seen. Could have spent hours just taking flower pictures...
(I think I probably doubled our hiking time....click...there's another gorgeous shot) but my kids were very patient! :o)
Great day, and wonderful family time!

No Grizzlies Gulch
Saw no bears, grizzlies or otherwise in a beautiful hike via Grizzly Gulch to summit of Handies. Only a few other climbers this day. 7:30am to top at 11:30am. Probably my favorite 14ner mountain and approach with the peak right in your face for most of the climb. Lots of photo ops.
Came up American Basin- beautiful and easy trail- good for lowlanders like me. The views from the top were amazing!

American basin
Second trip to the summit. Traversed over from American on decent snow. Great morning and great weather. The views from Handies' summit are definately some of the best.

West Face Ski
Skinned to 12000' in American Basin, then kick-stepped up the west face on decent snow. Skied from the summit via the ascent route. On the way up, dropped my climbing helmet and watched it careen off a cliff and slide into the basin 1000' below. Miraculously found it with hardly a scratch on my way out.

Via American Basin and Southwest Slope
The drive to the trailhead is as scenic as the hike itself. This was our 13th Fourteener in Colorado Rockies, but everything went well.

Handies
Started hiking around 11k. Went over a 13k pass descended down and then up Handies trail. It was a fun hike. Nothing compared to mount Whitney. Cloudy all day. Saw an 82 yr old about 30 meters from the summit. I wish I can do that when I am 80.

Hiked up the basin with shanahan96, he then headed over to Whitecross while I went up Handies. Stayed on or near the ridge crest from the Whitecross saddle, some interesting scrambling here. In combination with the knee deep snow some parts were very interesting. I descended the standard route which went really fast in the snow but would have been a real slog going up.
An easy 14er but things got gruelling on the way over to Point 13,795ft. Don't attempt both peaks on a single outing unless your seeking a great workout. It's a pretty LOOOng saddle! We were able to drive to the TH without any snow drifts blocking the way.
