Odd Pioneer peak  Sucess!

Went up this the day after Salzburger. It is weird to be walking up a giant sand dune in the middle of the Pioneers. The sights were predictably outstanding.

Great surf down  Sucess!

On the way up we followed the ridge from the beginning, but going down we took a left at the horn for the finest looking sand on the mountain. We were practically at the bottom in a few minutes.

Fun times  Sucess!

Partner bailed out maybe a quarter-mile from the summit, so I bagged it solo. Great fun sliding down the sand, definitely makes the climb worth it.

Pleasant Approach  Sucess!

Nice approach hike. Weather was iffy with rain and snow. Made the summit in 3 hours, roundtrip in 4.5 hours.

With Mike and Mark  Sucess!

Interesting climb, like we were on a ancient sand dune. Fun with my Dad and Mike. Killer geology, I might head back with my mineral kit someday. http://www.coloradoascents.blogspot.com/2014/07/idaho-handwerk-peak-and-goat-mountain.html

Fun  Sucess!

After we set up base camp we decided to scramble up this one for an evening warm up. we summited around 6:00 and made it back down in time for a few brews and foot soaking in the river. this had some of the strangest scree of any pioneer summit I have ever been on.

JUst before Winter  Sucess!

We made it up this right before "winter" came upon the mountains.

Dune climbing  Sucess!

IdahoKid is right about the tough part being the routefinding and bushwhacking when the trail peters out. I kept getting pulled right and had to lose a few hundred feet of elevation. Then comes the steep sandy dune climbing until you reach the summit ridge. From there, great views all around, especially Salzburger Spitzel, Goat Mountain, Florian's Nudl, and Duncan with Pioneer Cabin over your shoulder.

Bushwhacking!  Sucess!

We climbed the north-west sand slope to the ridge and then on up. Great views of two lush basins and Duncan Ridge. Dramatic drop on the south side! Very worth the trail-less effort through the brush.

What a beautiful peak!

I'd say the most difficult aspect of this climb is navigating the upper reaches of the North Fork Hyndman Creek Valley just below the southwest slopes.
