Hawkeye Point  Sucess!

Met up with a great friend for a fun little weekend trip. The area is a nice little spot with some very nice improvements.

Lots of corn!  Sucess!

Had a nice drive there and rolled up ready to dominate it. Only to find many bugs and tons of corn!

Hawkeye Point  Sucess!

I believe I was here in about 1992 I may still have the key chain to prove it!

Easy one!  Sucess!

It is a nice place to visit - I liked the signs and distances to the other state highpoints.
HP #24 for me.

#8  Sucess!

...And I'd reached the top of ID, AZ, and NM before getting the one that's two hours from where I grew up.

Post-expedition beers in nearby Worthington, Minnesota, to wind down from the harrowing trek.

HP # 6  Sucess!

Would have been a little embarrasing to not be succesful on this attempt!! Did HP # 6 on our way out to relatives that live in the Black Hills. Sounds like they've really improved the summit area since I was there.

SHP #49 AND LAST!!!!!  Sucess!

I started bagging state highpoints in 1985, before Jack Longacre started the Highpointers Club! Summited this one while on my 8000-mile Great American Road Trip, in which I bagged the last 5 of my 49 state high points. I decided 12 years ago, after spending 2 nights at 20,320 feet on Aconcagua with four buddies in a 3-man tent, that I'd much rather go to Nepal if I can go on another 2-3 week climb somewhere. So Iowa is it, #49 and FINAL! Loved the quest. Now to other goals. The highpoint is quite a bit different than the photos posted on the Summitpost page, so I'll put up some of the new facilities as soon as I figure out how to get them from from camera into the computer! I thought it was going to be ironic that Iowa was my last SHP, but as I discovered, this was a terrific place to end the quest, as it is the one and only SHP that pays homage to all the others with its signposts.

State HP #24  Sucess!

Visited this one with my son on a misty, rainy day. Keychains now cost a dollar-way cheaper than the Mt. Arvon ones at Indian Country Sporting Goods in L'Anse, MI that run $3 (their cost) plus whatever you want to donate towards the upkeep of signage along the maze of logging roads, but it's all for a good cause.

Auto mountaineered  Sucess!

I finally made it to this one while visiting a relative in Ames, Iowa. I had to race to get there to beat the huge storm bearing in on Iowa. There were snowflakes and a cold wind while I was there. I would highly recommend hiking up Ocheyedan Mound while you are in the vicinity. It is 10 or so miles away and a "significant" summit in Iowa.

Summit! Sort Of.  Sucess!

Made it to the top! Whew! Actually the challenge is just finding the farm where the top is. You can really drive to the highest point & walk about 30 feet to the real "summit." Signed the summit register that was there. I was w/ my friend David Dial. Good fun.

Hawkeye Point  Sucess!

Started the morning at Charles Mound in IL at 8:00am. Drove straight to Hawkeye Point in about 6 hours via southern Minnesota. My GPS told us to come from Sibley via the east but it would have been better to just come down SR60 onto 130th. Didn't see anyone there.

Now public property  Sucess!

Mrs. Sterler told me the county owns the land now, so there is no need to call her for access permission. Some "improvements" have been made to this highpoint with more apparently planned. HP15

A Great Way To End A Trip!!!  Sucess!

This was the seventh of seven HPs attained on my most ambitious weekend HP road trip to date; I drove 2600 miles in just over two days to complete this mega-loop road trip. HP #24 for me.
The owners wanted $1 for a commemorative keychain, but knowing they need donations for helping make this particular HP bigger and better in the future, I contributed $5 for the keychain. I will donate more to this HP project in the future, as well.

HP # 39  Sucess!

4th of 5 HP's on this road trip. Beautiful day to be out. Warm, sunny, and a slight breeze. Lots of corn! Had to detour slightly because of road closures. Looks like they have plans to make some changes there. It will be really nice when it's done!

A near miss  Sucess!

Route 60 was torn up and barricaded as we drove south from Minnesota. Had to detour and then follow the grid of dirt roads in order to spiral our way in toward the highpoint. Thought we might not find it. Finally found the sign partially hidden by trees along the side of the road. Once we parked the summit was obvious. Just keep climbing upward! ;-)
