Hello David:

I heard about the east coast states getting
another storm coming in - especially around
the Washington DC area. When those big storms
come in, how much snow do the Blue Ridge Mtns
usually get? And, why do they call them blue?

Hello Larry:

Yes, we had a sizable winter event last Sunday into Monday morning. The NC mountains, as usual, had varying amounts ranging from less than 1" in the SW to over a foot in the NW. Mount Mitchell won the prize with 16". This was still far from Mitchell's record of 50" from a single storm back in March '93. The mountains are aptly named as seen from a distance they do indeed look blue on the horizon. I have read that the blue comes from a haze created by compounds given off by evergreen trees reacting in the atmosphere.

Re: Hello David:

Fascinating! I keep forgetting how many
evergreens the NC mountains actually have.
Back in my seafaring days, I was stationed
in Charleston SC, but I didn't have a car so
I couldn't check out all those places.

That still seems like a lot (of snow) for
Mt. Mitchell! Please enjoy the white stuff!!!
