My mom and I did the Hawksbill Loop Trail in September 2006. It was really interesting to see the sun shining on Old Rag and Robertson Mountain covered in shadows only a couple of miles away.

Great views from the summit. Nice hike for my wife and I as we drove along Skyline Drive.
Hawksbill is a nice hike from Skyline Drive. For a conditioning hike, I like to start at the lower Whiteoak Canyon parking lot and go up Cedar Run and then Hawksbill.

New Years Eve
Nice hike and lots of wind and fog at the top! Part of a long day spent in SNP.

This was the first stop on a 6-day long loop through Shenandoah NP. It was a cold and dreary day, but the view allowed a misty view of what was in store.

Through the mist
Summited with my father-in-law Chuck from the upper trailhead. Everything above 2,500 feet was socked in with a light rain. We made it to the top pretty quickly on the good trail but had no views other than of clouds. The wind on the summit was pretty rough but not too bad on the rest of the hike due to heavy tree cover.

A gorgeous November Day. Got to the trailhead by 9 AM and started up. I never saw another person on the trail! The views were about the clearest I can remember seeing.
Hiked this after a fresh snow storm. The southern portion of the park had just opened 1pm that afternoon. Although it was around 4 pm when I started on this trail, I was the first one on it since the fresh snow. Very cool feeling to be the first one leaving my footprints in the snow.
Route Climbed: Hawksbill Trail Date Climbed: 25 May 2004
Hit the trail just before dusk, so I was treated to a wonderful sunset on the summit. I saw Mama Bear as well as 3 cubs on the way up and again heading down. We stayed out of each others' way, but it still made for a decent adrenaline rush!

Last day on the trail! But I started out with a quick up and down from Rock Creek shelter before descending to the valley. Great views under mostly overcast skies. Very windy but with good views of Old Rag to the east and the Great Valley to the west.

Clear, gorgeous day, around 45 degrees. 360 degree views with clear blue skies. This was a very fun climb in Shenandoah National Park. Summiters, Daniel J. Fleischmann and Brian Stefanovic.
Climbed Hawksbill on a sunny clear winter day with my wife and 11month old son, excellent views from the top, real clear, quick easy hike with a good bit of lingering snow.
Route Climbed: AT from the Parkway Date Climbed: October 1997
My only mountain east of the Mississippi! Unless you count a couple of hills in Northern Alabama (which I don't). My friends the Gallaway brothers took me on this trip during concurrent trips East to see family. A rain-turned-ice storm put about 2" of ice chunks on the trail from the trees. It was like a crystal forest! We did 15 miles of the AT through the park, climbing Hawksbill on the way. Just when I got up to pace it was over. Still a great hike, especially the beer stops!

Been there, done that......now if I could only remember when! I'm guessing it was in the fall of 2003, but I don't say that with any certainty.

Many timesNice views, and nice place to be when you can get it when it's quiet. Weekdays from late fall through early spring are good for that.
