Big bugs and bigger trucks
Cool to finally get on top of a mountain I see so often from the Boise foothills. The lower elevations were crawling with the OHV crowd, but up high it was just me and the Mormon Crickets.

You say Cinnabar, I say Hayden, let's call the whole thing off...
I was nursing an injury but desperately in need of some time outside. Thus I took a quick 2 days to hit the relatively easy Canyon, Owyhee, Cassia, and Box Elder (UT) county high points.
Driving from Pickles Butte, I passed two buildings that I realized were the post office and county courthouse. Owyhee County has very few towns or businesses. Because of the size of the county and the isolation of this summit, it just takes some time to get to. Be sure you have plenty of fuel in the tank.
Shortly after turning off the highway, the pavement ends and the road is easygoing gravel for the next 11 miles. This stretch of road winds through a gorgeous canyon, in my opinion the most beautiful area I saw all day. After turning off the gravel road it gets a little more serious: single lane and some ruts where higher clearance is advised. I met an ORV and we were able to clear one another without incident, but it was tight. I believe about any SUV could get up this first distance though.
At 4.5 miles after turning off Silver City Road, I came to a small drilling operation. It is here that the road narrows even more and becomes considerably tougher. If one were to walk from here it would be 3-3.5 miles one way. I kept driving, parking at the saddle where others have parked. From here it was a short and easy road walk with my dogs to the summit.
At the summit, a chilly wind blew right through us. The dogs were happy to have a respite from the rough roads but they were also ready to walk down and hop back in the vehicle when it was time. I found two benchmarks relatively close to one another under the shadow of the towers. There is also a granite memorial stone. We saw several small (and apparently new) wildfires off to the east. They just won’t quit in 2020.
Eric's 4R took us to the summit. Glad not to meet any vehicles coming the other way. Thousands of Mormon Crickets. It looked like the ground was moving around you.

Well, we definitely didn't follow any of the routes laid out here... drove in on Jeep road F481 until the creek crossing and started hiking F491 two miles before leaving the two-track and bushwhacking southwest to intersect with F490. At this point we made the mistake of going west and found ourselves close to Turntable, so we decided to bag another peak and went up the north ridge, came down to the saddle between it and Hayden, and followed Hayden's northwest ridge to the summit. A little hazy but nice views...army of giant mormon crickets was hideous though.
Descended the same way to the saddle before heading directly down north, which was painfully steep and littered with deadfall before we finally reached F490 again and circuitously took it back to the truck. About 10.5 miles RT and 4000' elevation gain, plus a few battle scars and bruises.

Hike and bike
I was short on time so drove most of the way. Parked at the saddle before Turntable and hike a biked. Turns out the road was too steep or too loose most of the way for fun mountain biking. Nice views. Definitely feels like a Nevada mountain rather than an Idaho one.

Parked 0.8 miles up the road to War Eagle Mountain and hoofed it from there. Hiked up and over Turntable Mountain en route to Hayden Peak. Spectacular views of some desolate and unique terrain in many directions.

Mostly Drive Up
I stopped a bit short of the summit to get a little hiking in, this is a nice area and Silver City was unique. The roads at this point are best set for an ATV, the ruts are pretty narrow.

Owyhee Goodness
Had a great long day with Nick and Matt. We took the N. approach via Scotch Creek and enjoyed the bit of class 3 at the top. Enjoyed a summit beer that was almost, but not quite, warm.
Nice mountain bike ride from the town of silver city. The way down was tons of fun. Beautiful day with amazing views of the valley.

Long Day
Was about 15 miles round trip and went up the Northern Approach. Lots of snow still at this time of the year on this approach. Snow was firm and solid. A lot of fun for being close to Boise.

Long Ride
Mountain bike is a great way to tour this area and get up this peak. From just above Sinker Creek it was 23 miles and 6500 feet elevation gain (roundtrip). There is still active mining nearby and some new private property issues getting to the summit.

Labor day weekend
was a great weekend for Bob Bolton and myself as we did Steens Mtn in Oregon and this one the same day, then the Malheur cohp (Stevenson Pt) and Granite Peak in Nevada the following day and Crane Mtn in Oregon before we ran out of weekend.
I was very taken with the Silver City area and some of the gold mining areas that we passed on the way in from Jordan Valley. This is an area that deserves more visitation by myself. A jeep road goes to the top and services an antenna installation there.
