How did the Navajo determine that Hesperus was taller than Lavender? :-D

Many years ago...

much of the area was covered by water, as evidenced by fossils I saw high on Hesperus last year. (Seriously.) Maybe it was easier to tell the difference when Lavender was, say, 5 feet above sea level and Hesperus was 8 feet high! (Not seriously.)
