"As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."

Highpoint #15/a perfect stormI left my hotel in Philly at 3:45 in the morning. The area was experiencing a record breaking (for April) nor'easter but it only took me 3 hours to get to Highpoint State Park. The creeks and rivers along the way were flooded and swollen. I passed one car submerged up to it's windshield. I got there more than an hour before the gates to the park opened. Since the storm had subsided to a slight drizzle (but still very windy) I decided to hike in and out before the weather got worse again. Just before I reached the highpoint, it DID get worse again. Over the next 45 minutes, rain, sleet, hail and snow fell/blew on me and I hadn't brought a hat, umbrella, or raincoat. Still, since I likely was only going to be there once, I hiked out via the Appalachian Trail back to the highway. I got back to the car just as the ranger was unlocking the gates. I dried off over the next 3.5 hours in the rental car while driving back to the Philadelphia Airport.

Cool, crisp dayI visited High Point during a business trip to CT. Thankfully, the park was open and I could drive up to the monument as I was suffering from the flu. It was a beautiful crisp, clear December morning, and I was the only one there. This is my 17th state highpoint.

Cross Country FunThe snow was fresh, deep and i wanted to try cross country skiing so played hookie from work and took some lessons, got rentals at the center, did the swamp loop then headed for the monument. What a beautiful day with crisp skies of blue against the snow.

Route Climbed: AT Southbound to Monument Trail. After spending a frigid night at Sawmill Pond Campground I drove the the trailhide and hiked up. Very pleasant and only encountered a few people on the trail, but I was alone on the summit. Amazing views...and a very big monument tower that is too big for the mountain.

Route Climbed: Route 23 Date Climbed: September 30, 2005The highpoint of New Jersey is in the High Point State Park in the far North-West corner of the state, just a few miles from Port Jervis, NY. It's an easy drive from New York City, but it's just far enough out that as you get within 30 miles or so of the park, the slums have given way to suburbs and the suburbs have given way to rolling hills with pretty fields, farms and forests.
I arrived at the end of September and the road was lined with farmer's stands selling pumpkins and chrysanthemums; the weather was a perfect warm autumnal afternoon and the view from New Jersey's highest point was lovely. Hawks soared in the sky over the valley and the leaves were just showing a hint of color.
The park entrance is on the right of Rt 23 North, and a paved road leads from the entrance all the way up to the 200-foot mini-Washington Monument with parking at the foot.
Directions to High Point, NJ from the the NYC area (east/south)
From the South: Take I-287 to Rt 23 North
From the GW Bridge: Take I-80 West to Rt 23 North
Follow Rt 23 North High Point State Park
~ 7 miles north of Sussex, NJ
~ 3 miles north of Colesville, NJ
The road goes directly up to the monument at the summit with parking just below
