I did a one week cruise with Holland America in mid August. The only peak I climbed was Gastineau Peak (Juneau). This page is great information for those that want to hit a few summits while cruising Alaska. Wish you would have gone before me and then I could have climbed a few more peaks (haha). Thanks for the great information.
I guess you missed my "hiking the inside passage cruise" TR last year...next time you'll have even more beta! I'm thinking Mt Juneau next time I visit
Cruise ships have been coming to Anchorage for decades. In 1986 I worked for a cruise company loading and unloading cruise ships at the Port of Anchorage and cruise ships had been coming for years before then.
I'll have to correct my report. My source was crewmembers on the Amsterdam and apparently they were unaware the the world existed before Holland America. But see the local paper... http://www.adn.com/2010/05/24/1292461/25-cruise.html ...which says that this is the first time in 25 years, at least
Now I have to reconsider a vow I made never to go on a cruise. Thanks for showing me a new way of looking at these trips.
You might consider it the best base camp you ever had!
I was on that very cruise, well same itinerary and ship: our voyage went from 8/9-23/2010. My first cruise and first trip to Alaska. On the last full day while we were docked in Victoria, Captain van der Waard hopped into our elevator so I got to meet and have a photo taken with him.
I don't know if you still read this, but are you the same Jim Egan who hiked Chief? My dad and I have tried twice and couldn't find a good route to the summit. If you are, I'd love to know how to contact you and find out how to get up there. If not, these are great photos and stories.
One and the same!! Good luck to you when you return to Chief Mountain...may the weather be excellent on the day you select!
