Himalayan Blue Sheep

Himalayan Blue Sheep (Pseudois nayaur) Blue sheep (Na or Nawa in Tibetan, also called Bharal) can be spotted frequently in rugged terrain all over the northern Himalaya (here near Yamdrok Yumtso at an altitude of 4500m). (Central Tibet - 16 October 2008)

but why do they call these "Blue Sheep"?

Here is the answer… More seriously, its naming as “blue sheep” is due to its coat which sometimes has a bluish sheen.

In my opinion, the most remarkable feature of the blue sheep is that the underparts and back of the legs are white, while the chest and front of the legs are black, see here, here or here.

While the Himalayan Blue Sheep (Pseudois nayaur) is rather common, the smaller Dwarf Blue Sheep (Pseudois schaeferi) is an endangered species with an estimated remaining 200 individuals living in the rocky slopes of the upper Yangtze river near the Tibet-Sichuan border.
