Hochkoenig is a great mountain and I am glad that finally it has its own page on SummitPost.

I have been waiting for years to go there on a ski tour. Hope that this winter will offer good conditions - still passable road to Arthur haus and enough snow to the summit.

King of diamond peak above the King's Lake and across from Watzmann( does that mean Watch Man?)

Hi desainme,

thank you for voting.

I do not understand - what is the connection between "King of diamond peak" and Hochkönig?

Concerning Watzmann: Watzmann is the second highest mountain-range in Germany. Indeed its the highest mountain, whose summits, slopes and ridges belong completely to Germany (Wetterstein with Zugspitze is shared with Austria). Watzmann in my opinion is one of the most beautiful mountains in the whole alps. East face above Königsee (Kings lake - has nothing to do with Hochkönig) is one of the highest walls of the whole alps. "Watzmann" has no special meaning. But legends say that he was a cruel king (!) who was turned into stone for his monstrous crimes.

Greetings from old Europe to the new world.

From Hinterthal to Matrashaus?

Does anyone know how long it takes to hike from Hinterthal, up to Niedere Torscharte, and then onto Matrashaus? Also there's reference to a glacier between Niedere Torscharte, and then onto Matrashaus - is it OK to hike on with normal hiking gear, or do you need specific ice-walking kit? (This would be in August, if that makes any difference...) Any insight much appreciated!! Thanks....

Some ideas

A very nice page, thank you!

A general topo with the various names mentioned in the overview would be nice.
Maybe add some links about the weather?
