easy walk from Skyline Drive  Sucess!

Followed the access road, bypassed the technology, and scrambled to the top of the highest boulder. Snow made it a bit trickier than it might have been otherwise, but the access road had been plowed.

Started from Gravel Springs  Sucess!

Nice day to hike although it was very hot and humid. Did Hogback, S. Marshall, and N. Marshall from Gravel Springs. Ended the day by giving 2 smelly, friendly AT thru-hikers a ride down to Front Royal where they planned to drink some local brew.

Not much to see  Sucess!

Tioga is right; the AT doesn't touch the top any more. Just take the very overgrown road to the top.

AT doesn't touch top anymore

I know that all maps & guides I have seen recently for the AT show the trail going right over the summit next to the towers. However, they must have re-routed the AT because we ended up looping just to the south of the summit and coming out to the hang-glider launch pad. From there we could look up and see the tower at the top, but the trail never took us up there. We kept going north on the AT and didn't bother to hike up to the top from there.

AT from Elkwallow Picnic Area  Sucess!

I hiked up the Appalachian Trail to Hogback from the Elkwallow Picnic Area. The day was cold and getting colder. It wasn't long before the snow was falling and soon it was starting to stick. The light blanket of snow on the ground was beautiful. It was a good winter day for a hike.

Skyline Drive Appalacian Trail  Sucess!

While driving Skyline Drive with my daughter, she was not so enthusiastic about this summit. So I hopped out of the car for a quick jaunt to its summit. Well my solo hike worked because she decided to accompany me up Hawksbill a little ways up the road.

Route Climbed: AT Date Climbed: 27 May 2004  Sucess!

Visited the highest point in Warren County, VA as part of a business trip. The hike was very short with the best views coming from the road at the beginning; the actual summit has a slight view through the trees, but the transmitters kill the wilderness feel. Don't get me wrong though, its a great and quick hike!

Nice summit. I especially like the hang glider launching 'ramp'. Sunny and getting unseasonably hot.

Route Climbed: Appalachian Trail, from Skyline Drive 20.1 Date Climbed: June 2003  Sucess!

We hiked down the AT from Little Devils Stairs overlook, and then went up a steep portion, which became flatter and led us to a house with high voltage signs. No view, but a nice, strenuous hike to cap our day.
