Pretty forest trails, beautiful meadows full of flowers, and a darned good looking peak.
This was my third time climbing Holy Cross. The bugs were annoying on this hike below treeline. We also included UN 13831, which is a high 100.
This was my first time climbing Holy Cross. The climb back over Half Moon Pass was invigorating!
CLIMBED THE N RIDGE FROM HALFMOON TH...KIND OF A YO-YO ROUTE WITH PLENTY OF ELEV GAIN/LOSS!
Hiked the North Ridge from Halfmoon Trailhead. Had the summit to myself at 8:58 AM. Water bottles started to freeze.
It was a long haul up there, but well worth it.
This was wonderful, snowy experience up Holy cross couloir with a friend and I. It was also my sixth time on top of this wonderful place.
Climbed with a couple of buddies from 14ers.com. Cold, cold morning with mist, fog, and low clouds. Long, painful descent of the standard route, but well worth it.
Beautiful sunny day. Hot even. Still a lot of snow on the mountains, but we didn't come across any on our route. The view of the Cross from across the Bowl of Tears is spectacular, something you cannot see from the standard route up Holy Cross.
It was my wife's first 14'er, first mountain at all for that matter. We had a great climb together and hopefully she will climb so more with me.
Ascended N Ridge of Holy Cross first on my way to Notch Mtn. Perfect weather.
did the cross couloir late in the spring of last year. Quite a fun experience. we took the normal route back down. I want to go back to that area and do the 13er that is just to the SE of Holy Cross. I forget the name of it right now. That couloir that you can see from the bottom of the cross couloir looks like a real trip. steep and fun.
Easy hike up the North ridge, my climbing partner and I took our girl friends on their first 14ner and all made it without any problems.
My regular climbing partner Mark and I traversed the Halo on his b'day...
A beautiul day on a beautiful mountain.
This is such a gorgeous peak! And we started with headlamps under a half moon... Four and a half hours on the ascent which was pretty intense due to the fact that one has to gain treeline 3 times.
A very demanding ascent, but the rain on the hike out was a nice cool-off.
Beautiful, cool, sunny, perfect autumn day! Unfortunately, it was also the same day that Michelle Vanek mysteriously disappeard from the peak. We may have been some of the last folks to speak with her (she started before us and asked where the trailhead was). I climbed it with 3 other teachers from the school where I worked, and none of our pics or videos helped with the search. Maybe years from now, the mystery will be solved.
Uphill both ways with some snow? Wait... isn't this the route that my Grandpa took to school? My first CO 14er - amazingly beautiful and the friendliest climbers I've ever encountered.
We knew in the parking lot at 6am that we were in for a day hike with no summit.... it was raining:( We hiked anyways in the rain (no thunderheads) and made it all the way to 45 minutes away from the summit before we turned around. We have to go back. (See my July 14,2007 summit via Halo Ridge)!:-)
I sure liked the portion of the trip from Half Moon TH to the summit of Holy Cross, but I stopped having fun on the Halo Ridge. The footing is pretty bad, on loose, often large talus. Fell down a few times when rocks came loose. My 40-lb, two foot tall dog really didn't like contouring on the rocks, and that put a damper on the day; if my baby isn't happy, I'm not happy!
