Good hike but popular. There was a "Bill and Dave" hiking group with about 80 people.
Post fire as the TH just re-opened. Went up Pythian, very sad..
Did this hike a number of times as a small child. Gunsite rock has a great view of the valley below.
The scenic approach more than makes up for the lack of views on top- especially if one takes the side trip to Gunsight Rock.
Lead a hiking group
Sonoma Mountain HP in the AM and Hood Mountain in the PM - each roughly 7 miles, 2000 feet of gain and 3 hours. Good day! Best views are from Gunsight Rock, which is a 5 minute side trip from the the Goodspeed trail. Trip report is HERE
First climb in sonoma county with my Dad. Nice half day, made it back in time to see the niners win.
Up Johnson Ridge and over to Gunsight Rock. Limited views due to morning fog.
Hiked Hood Mtn and Gunsight Rock after hitting Bald and Red Mtns earlier in the morning. Disappointing view from the summit... Bald Mtn was significantly better.
With the vast majority of the route under a canopy of vegetation, popping out at the top took me by surprise. I enjoyed the monument that referenced some of the history of the mountain and the views to be gained from standing on the tiny pinnacle behind the monument.
Double hump starting at good speed to Pythian then back with heavy pack. Great day to see the city etc.. 5400' of gain!
Up the Johnson Ridge/and Pond Trails down the Goodspeed-Nattkemper Trail into Sugarloaf Park. Walked back to my car up Pythian Road via highway 12.
Gunsight Rock great place to have a lunch & enjoy the view. Photos & Info.
Climbed this on a beautiful early autumn day. Really a spectacular trail. I summited, then backtracked to Gunsight Rock for a late lunch.
Back way up after work with training pack. Dinner on Gunsight at 8pm with nice views of city lights. 12th summit this year.
Routine training hike. Met with ranger after and was told park is closing a week due to budget cuts!
A pleasant morning hike before visiting wineries in the afternoon.
Should have followed Marmaduke's advice to go to Gunsight Rock.
If you take the Goodspeed trail, next time don't take a right to the summit. Go to the left and you come out at Gunsight Rock, there are great views from there. If your coming from Hood Mt. Regional Park, once at the summit, decend the trail to the SW. You'll come to a trail (Goodspeed) to the left, stay straight to Gunsite Rock. From the summit down to Gunsight it is about an 1/8 to a 1/4 mile walk.
This is my main stay conditioning hike. Have done it at a minimum 30 times last year alone. A favorite is to start on the Goodspeed train, go up and over to the Pythian trailhead then back. Done with a heavy pack and I was set for Denali and Aconcagua. GPS here:http://connect.garmin.com/activity/59424558
