Humphreys in February  Sucess!

It was a great day to climb Humphreys especially in February.

Great hike with great friends in unseasonably warm conditions. There was very little snow on the day after Christmas and it was a bit of a disapointment. However, it was chilly at the top, about 30 F, and winds were insane, gusting at almost sixty miles per hour. After getting back down to the saddle though we were okay. Enjoy.

Fun and easy snow climb through a beautiful forest leads to a nice ridgeline - a little too close to the Ski resort for my liking, but still nice. We ran the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim 2 days before this.

Climbed Boundary Peak, and Mount Whitney, the same week. Stayed in Flagstaff on Saturday, and had breakfast at "The Place" at 5:00 AM and started climbing Sunday morning at 6:00 AM. Had a great hike through the forest. It had snowed the night before and the trail was dusted with snow. Reached the summit with Ed and Joe and spent about an hour on top. Seen a lot of other hikers. Just about every hiker had a dog along with them. Seemed strange to me. On the way down we looked for the old airplane that had crashed, but did not go far enough back to find it. We needed time to drive back to Vegas to fly home on Monday morning. It was a great way to end the week and a beautiful climb since the aspens were bright yellow. HP #5.

Beautiful fall day with the aspens in full color and even spooked a herd of elk on the way up. Trail was pretty busy.

I flew into Phoenix the day before, spent the night in Flagstaff and hit the trail by 9:30am. We reached the summit at 12:30pm. The conditions were ideal with clear skies and only moderate winds. The trail was mostly clear with a few small patches of snow/ice in some places, but it was quite manageable with just hiking boots. This is my 12th state highpoint.

Came up from Phoenix Friday night and camped out on the ski slope. The elk were in their rut and bugled all night. Reached the summit about 10:30 the next morning. It was incredibly cold and windy on this day; many people turned back at the saddle due to the wind. Even with that, it was an incredibly beautiful hike, and I will definitely do it again.

This was a great climb through forest and then rocks. The false summit was kind of depressing but the view made up for it.

An excellent autumn day in the San Francisco Peaks range: sunny, clear & crisp, no wind, yellow and fiery orange aspen leaves. Downside was dozens and dozens of tourists. Drove out of Phoenix at 7:00am. Arrived at the Humphrey's Peak trailhead at 9:20am. Started the hike at 9:32am, summited at 12:12pm. Spend 35 minutes at the summit....had excellent views all-around (e.g. Grand Canyon to the north). Left summit at 12:47pm, back at my car at 2:15pm (about 4hrs 45 min roundtrip). Drove through Sedona on my way south to Phoenix. Great day to be out.

It was a beautiful hike. There are some challenging parts at the top with some boulder scrambling. It took me 5 hours to summit, but I did take it slow. My dog loved it!

I've been up this peak something like 20 times, and it's almost always been a lot of fun. Personal favorite - a route that took me unwittingly by some airplane wreckage on the way. Favorite descent - scree run into the inner basin. Pretty easy hike, but be prepared to descend quickly in the event of a storm!

Route Climbed: from ski area base Date Climbed: May 12, 2005  Sucess!

It's been a heavy snow year in the Southwest! Started from the ski area parking lot at 5:50 AM, with snow to the car. I got into the main valley between Agassiz and Humphrey, and not knowing exactly how to proceed, climbed the path of least resistance partway up Agassiz. Soon I realized I needed to traverse left to Humphreys...not a big deal. Snow was firm but not too icy, I did fine with ski poles and boots. The water kept freezing in the mouthpiece of my water bladder device. Topped out by 9 AM and hung out in light winds, but still got cold in the brilliant sun. The ski descent was fantastically amazing, as were the views of Grand Canyon and the Sedona areas in the distance. Descended the steeper "direct' route. Magnifique. The back bowl was stuffed with snow. Big cornices on the summit ridge.

Route Climbed: Humphrey's Trail Date Climbed: June 27, 2003  Sucess!

I hiked this one alone after I hiked the Zion Narrows the day before. Despite having giardia at the time, I kept a good pace hiking to the top. The weather was hot and very windy on the ridge. It was interesting to read that these mountains have the highest timberline in the U.S. The view of the surrounding mountains and desert was good.
