Beautiful Jan day. Used snowshoes up to the saddle. Snow was packed enough to hike the rest of the way. Fairly cold and windy but perfect conditions for a winter ascent.

August 30, 2012 - Climbed for my second time while moving my car from California to New Mexico. 3:20 round trip.

July 2001 - Climbed with Thomas after a great week at Lake Powell. Had beers and burgers at the ski bowl after the hike.

Weather and trail conditions were favorable to allow me to sneak in this ascent on the second day of winter. It felt more like autumn than winter.

Climbed this one just after we moved to Flagstaff. We made it to the top, but did not have a lot of time to enjoy it as we were chased off by a thunderstorm.

Route Climbed: Kachina Trail Date Climbed: multiple winter  Sucess!

Living in Flagstaff, I do this several times a year. I never do it in summer. First, I hate heat and scrabbling up loose cinders. Second, I just love it when it's all snowy and alpine up there. My favorite is to snowshoe up after a heavy storm, breaking fresh trail through trees. Great scenery and workout. Ditch the snowshoes at about treeline, gain the ridgeline, then enjoy generally wind-packed snow to the summit. Awesome...

Route Climbed: Humphrey's Peak Trail Date Climbed: September 17, 2003  Sucess!

Left the trailhead at 7:45 and reached the summit about noon. I started the hike on my own; however, quickly caught up with two guys attempting the summit and went up the mountain with them.

We were passed by several people on their way down saying the cold and the wind at the top turned them around before they reached the summit or caused them to crawl the last few hundred yards. The wind was fairly strong, especially just after we reached the third false summit and the last push from the last false summit to the summit was a run, bent over at the waist trying to fight the wind. Enjoyed fifteen minutes atop Arizona and in the wind shelter before heading back down.

A great hike with some excellent views.

Route Climbed: Main Humphreys Trail Date Climbed: September 1, 2003  Sucess!

Got an early start and reached the summit about 7:00 AM. Heard many barking coyotes on the way. Sounded very close, but never saw one. Easy climb, and nice views from the top, as weather was great -- at least early. After running down the mountain, and reaching my car in the lot, I turned to see dark storm clouds enveloping the summit. By 11:00 AM, hail and rain poured down from the skies. On my way down, I had passed 50+ hikers going up, many of whom seemed inadequately dressed and unprepared for such a quick change in the weather. It was my first time on Humphreys, and I'm glad I got the early start.

Great hike. Second time to the top. Concerned about weather as much of the mountain was enveloped in clouds and thunderstorms were possible. Luckily they did not materialize and we continued our hike through the mist. Few views available but the lack of visibility made the hike interesting. Hard to believe it is Arizona. Did get a little hail and rain but only when we were well into the descent.

Route Climbed: Humprey's-Weatherford-Kachina Loop Date Climbed: August 30, 2003  Sucess!

Great hike through a beautiful forest, and then up to saddle. From saddle, another 1.5 miles to the top along a beautiful ridge at altitude. Altogether, a short, easy hike if one is in shape. Unfortuneately, we did not get any views and it was definitely crowded. The rest of the loop started off well, but ended poorly. The inner basin was great, but once over the saddle between Doyle and Fremont, it became quite boring. It is a long 18 mile loop and by the end we had had more than enough. Looking very forward to climbing Humprey's in winter for snow/winter/mountaineering practice.

Have climbed it 6 times: once in '94, twice in '97, again in '98 and '99 and then again in '03. Have also failed twice due to total whiteout and deep soft snow. Wonderful hike all around.

Great hike through the trees. Beautiful views above the tree line. WAY too many bugs at the summit. Would liked to have stayed longer, but they drove me crazy.

Route Climbed: Standard Route - Ski Area Date Climbed: May 6, 2002  Sucess!

My father-in-law and I bagged this peak and it turned out to be a wonderful day. No wind on top and not a cloud in the sky. To bad about Agassiz Pk, don't you think that the National Forest or some kind of organization could build a trail that everyone must stay on and not disturb the surrounding area?

Mark one for the environmentalist.

What an excellent start to the new year!

My first climb of Humphrey's, and based on the comments of others here, I am glad I did it in the winter. Bizarre but fun to be using crampons in Az. Conditions could not have been better-postholing in shirtsleeves to an awe-inspiring view of the Grand Canyon from the top. Only stayed for about 20 minutes, then trudged through waist deep drifts to the ski runs for a quick descent on our collective backsides. This is definitely the best mountain experience I have had in the state.

Route Climbed: Arizona Snow Bowl Trail Date Climbed: May 10, 1995  Sucess!

When I climbed Humphries in May of 1995, a late season snow storm had dumped a foot of snow two days before we arrived. The pine trees were covered with snow and we were postholing: hard to believe you would experience this in Arizona in May. We made it to the snowy summit after a few hours of post holding and slogging, only to be greated with tremendous views of the Arizona high desert, and even a bit of Grand Canyon.

I do this hike every couple months. It's the closest place for me to get above tree-line from Sedona.

I'm hoping to ski off the summit this winter.

Winter conditions (in Fall) made the mountain tougher than I expected (read: I got lost). Awesome trip.
