2nd time from PHX  Sucess!

Climbed again with my mother, this time we both summitted. Cool-to-warm temps, nicely breezy, partly cloudy and hazy all day but no t-storms ever developed. Dealt with the altitude a bit better this time, though I still had a headache on the way down. Seeing a few patches of snow on the upper reaches of Humphreys and Agassiz really cheered me up!

From the Snowbowl  Sucess!

Nice morning, got some light rain coming back down. I would like to climb this again in the winter to tack on Agassiz Peak.

snowbowl route

Left Flagstaff at 5:00 AM- just early enough to beat the crowds. Cool and windy, but plenty of places to bask in the sun. Lots of lightning scars visible on the summit.

Group dynamics  Sucess!

Did this one with Penny and her young son Joe. It was the first time I'd met Joe, and he wasn't too sure about me. We didn't get a particularly early start, and on the long hike up, Joe got increasingly grouchygrumbly. I think i was holding out for reaching the saddle and camping there--he wanted to stop...anywhere. It was cold and twilight by the time we reached the saddle. I immediately got the tent set up and the bags in, then fired up the stove. I wasn't paying much attention to what Joe was doing. I got Penny some hot drink and then finally turned to find Joe. There he was, tending an already burning campfire that he had built himself with no input from either Penny or me. Impressive kid, and I must have expressed that thought to him. After that he warmed up to me. Next day we did the peak and no grousing or grumbling was heard from any quarter. A beautiful peak! Great views from the summit. Hey Joe...if you're out there...Happy Trails!

Unbelievable winds  Sucess!

Climbed Humphreys the same day as the previous poster and the winds were indeed tremendous. I would agree with the estimate of 85-95 mph as it was completely impossible for us to stand up on the final 100-yard climb to the top. I have never experienced anything close to it my lifetime. Our group reached the top at about 10:30 and the winds got noticibly worse in the 20 minutes or so we were up there, I can't even imagine what they were like later in the day. Little bit of snow along the trail before timberline. Other than the wind, weather was nice. Reasonably warm (50-60 degrees) and no signs of thunderstorms.

Windy day  Sucess!

Got to the summit in 2hrs 15min, met alot of people who had turned back due to wind, which was around 85-95mph at the summit, enough to knock someone down. Pretty wild weather, partly cloudy, wind was definatley the most memorable thing tough. Great hike, great 360 views.

Third peak climbed that day  Sucess!

I started at Lockett Meadow and climbed straight up the south slope of Rees Peak. I then headed to Aubineau Peak and summit it via the east slope. After that I summitted Humphreys via it's east slope. All three of these ascents were steep, and difficult. After Humpreys Peak I headed down the trail on the west side to near the saddle between Humphreys and Agassiz and descend striaght down the scree and snow covered slope into the valley.

Whew!  Sucess!

Good hike! Snow on about 1/2 the trail below tree line, several downed trees. Being a Florida girl this was definitely the highest elevation I've hiked by far! No idea how people do this in 5 hours roundtrip, took us 3.5 hours to come down at a quick pace and only 1 short stop.

Humphreys  Sucess!

Icy hard snow covered some N facing slopes but the S slopes were surprisingly snow free. I made up a little bit of a potpourri route but it worked out just fine. Not my first time on this mtn and perhaps not the last.

snowless  Sucess!

A surprisingly snowless climb on a relatively balmy day. 3 hours 40 minutes up and 27 degrees on top with great views. Early winter '05 had the lightest snowfalls on record.

First time I got AMS  Sucess!

This was a fun hike. A storm was rolling up quickly, so we hiked down at a very fast pace. This resulted in me getting AMS. Which was just a splitting headache. But bad enough to keeps me down for the rest of the day.

Spring climb  Sucess!

Nice day out, snow most of the way. Clear skies and some wind at the top. Met two others that were coming down, no one else on the mountain.

No more false summits!  Sucess!

Snow bowl route was nice. It was a long hike and t- shirt weather on top. False summits got a bit old but enjoyed it. Arizona gave us an A+ sunset that evening.
