Humphrey's Peak
I climbed Humphreys Peak on August 21st, 2005. This was my 19th state highpoint and the highest hike (not counting Hawaii) for me so far.

HP # 18
Couldn't have asked for a better day to climb but... I couldn't keep with the trail for much of the day. I basically bushwacked my way in the only direction I knew to go, up. Which made the climb much harder than it needed to be. Still alot of snow between 10,000 ft. and the treeline too.

Great Day
There was still a lot of snow down lower in the trees but on top it was beautiful.

HP #9
Went up the Dutchman in prime snow conditions. VERY windy up top, but great views, and the summit wind shelter provided a break from the wind. State highpoint #9.

The Dutchman!
Great morning, to the windy windy summit via the Dutchman glade. Summit had consistent winds over 50 mph, couldn't stand up! Great views, see the north rim of the grand canyon. State HP #5

Overnight
Started at the Snowbowl around 7am. The trail was really well broken in, but once we reached the basalt scree slope, the trail disappeared and headed straight up the scree slope (covered with snow). Saw the B-24 bomber along the ridge up to Hupmhreys. We made it Humphreys around 1pm and had the summit to ourselves. We then we down the ridge towards the saddle and camped just above the saddle to Agassiz. We did Agassiz the next day.

New Years!
Snowshoe-ed up in fresh powder (fought hard in a few spots) to gain the perfect summit ridge. Beautiful weather and a deserted summit were a nice change as compared to my hurricane-thwarted attempt last Nov. Got a late start (not due to drinking!) and summitted late in the day but it made for some awesome pictures. Unbelievable views!

jeez louise
Hiked with Rafiki up this gently sloped mountain for my 8th state high point. In the last final yards to the summit we encountered incredibly ferocious winds, at least 80 mph. The wind chill made it feel like it was 20 below.
Blissful walk past huge aspen and a spectacular view. First high mountain I ever summitted.

COLD
Me, Kris, Bethany and Brian made an attempt to camp on the summit. However, due to some late classes, we started at 5:30pm and ended up camping on the saddle between Humphreys and Agassiz Peak. It was very very cold, but it was warm in the tent and sleeping bags. Woke up to a frozen camelbak and water bottles. Great sunrise!

Nice one and very windy summit
Had camped in Painted Desert NP, so only got to the trailhead at the ski valley at 1.30 pm. A lot of people on the mountain, I was the last one to summit. Extremely windy at the top. Great day on Humphreys!
Hiked this on Thursday in route to Lone Pine and Whitney two days later.

Great View
We left at 2:00 a.m. and reached the summit in time to see the sunrise. It was a great view and nobody was there! On the way down we passed 75+ people. I recommend the early start...

A "10" Day
On the drive in there was a herd of about 50 elk, just off the highway. Left the Humphrey's Peak trail head at 5:45 AM and was on the summit by 8:15. Visibility was probably 100 miles with cool temperatures and light winds. I enjoyed sharing the top with Dawn and dog Junior before having 30 minutes of solo time for contemplation of the amazing scenery. On the way back down I counted 130 people and 11 dogs ascending. One more reason besides lightning avoidance to get an early start!

first state highpoint with my son
My 10yo son and I hiked this, his first of 3 state highpoints in 6 days (also NM and CO). We got to the saddle and had to descend and wait out some threatening thunderclouds. Then we went back up and bagged that peak.
