Hiked from Winfield to the summit in 3hrs, first one up there that day with perfect weather, spent a whole hour there basking in the splendid views all around. This was my second peak of 6 in 5 days. Had done Massive the day before.
Nice sawatch peak, completed with Casey, Steve and Scott.
Good conditions and stayed ahead of the normal Saturday 14er march. Fun little scramble over to Browns that you can make as easy or hard as you choose.
Climbed Huron Peak via North Ridge route coming over Browns Peak. Descended standard route. Beautiful sunny weather, gorgeous views!
I was going to try from Cloises Lake, but couldn't find the road, and Clear Creek was running scary-high. Just under 2h to the summit, including negotiating the hideous bog that some people call a "meadow." Trip report
Parked just outside of Winfield to add some extra distance. Getting ready for Rainieer in July. Snow on trail in some places. Crossed large snowfield about 3/4 of the way up. Snow was very soft even a 0800. Post holed a bunch. Glissaded on a couilor on the way down and avoided flat snowfield. Nice 14er for someone just starting out if you wait for some of the snow field to melt off. Did this one solo, partner Matt could not make it today.
Busted straight up the incline to the bowl. We descended with a variety of implements including a snowboard, a shovel, and a tarp.
I think that, at the time, I didn't appreciate that this is one of the better Sawatch 14er hikes.
Summitted at noon on the first day of summer. The upper slopes were covered in snow. We summitted too late. Our ice axes started to hum and Mindy's hair stood on end. And then BOOOOOM! Eight climbers poured off the summit in what is best decribed as a barely-controlled fall. All made it off the peak safely.
9/5/05 - Standard route the day following an epic on the Three Apostles. Quick round trip with Talus Monkey.
2/6/10 - Standard route from winter closure 3 miles east of Vickburg. Backpacked to Winfield Friday afternoon. Climbed something resembling the standard route in arduous snow conditions on Saturday before packing out. Nearly 25 miles round trip.
This was an easy climb.
Came up in Fall 2008 via the standard route. Cloudy day but still got some good views of the 3 Apostles.
Very nice hike, beautiful mouyntain!
The weather was looking like it was going to do something at dawn. Got to the summit at 10:00 am at the same time the second snow squall of the day arrived. It cleared up fast enough, though. Gorgeous place. I didn't realize that La Plata was just across the valley--still working on understanding the CO landscape. The ran began around 11:00 am, and didn't stop. I got a ride back to the car from a couple of guys from CO Springs. Very grateful, as I was tired of walking on the road, and not in the mood to get wet in the process. It rained all the way back to Buena Vista, and off an on T-storms all the rest of the day. I really love CO!
The scenery was exceptional :)
Nice day with the dogs.
A belated anniversary climb. A relatively quick hike up the mountain yielded great views. The wind made the summit stay shorter than we'd have liked, but it was fantastic otherwise.
Trip report and pictures.
Took my girlfriends dog Murphy. This was my 22nd Colorado 14er and his 2nd attempt and he finally got to summit one! Too bad I have had to bandage his paws for a week. More to come for him though! And me of course!!
From Winfield, up through Lulu Gulch, over Point 13,462 and Browns Peak. Descended the NW slopes route. SO great to be getting back out there after an injury had me sidelined for quite awhile.
