Route Climbed: Northwest Slopes II, Class 2 Date Climbed: June 30, 2005  Sucess!

My wife and I climbed Huron Peak during our annual 4th of July climb, raft and skydive weekend we do out of Denver each year. It was cold and windy towards the top but clear skies! This was the first time in my CO climbing where we were practically the only people on the mountain and the summit. I guess Thursdays are much better than the weekend!

Route Climbed: Standard, from North Ridge Date Climbed: Summer 2002  Sucess!

Bushwacked from the closed road from Winfield, found the trail up high. Did this solo with Osita, my dog.

Route Climbed: SW Slopes Date Climbed: September 10, 2005  Sucess!

This route was tougher than the standard route. After the cabin at 11500' or so, the trail veered left and then ended up in a boulder field. From there, it was hiking across boulders toward the west, gradually angling upward, all the time with great views of the Apostles, but slow going. I skinned my knee on a loose boulder. Once I got to the saddle at about 13100', the climb became easier. The rock along the ridge to the top was more solid, with a little bit of exposure but not too bad. All in all, a decent alternative to the crowded standard route.

Route Climbed: standard route (trail) Date Climbed: September 18, 2005  Sucess!

Wow, that 4wd road between Winfield and the signed trailhead is an adventure! What a blast. Anyway, the trail proper starts out gentle for a half mile and then must average a 25 degree incline or so after that. The trail is a marvel of sound trail construction. By far the best steep trail I have ever had the pleasure to climb. It will remain in great shape for decades if not longer, except for the very top, which has some stretches of very shallow and slippery scree. The views are quite impressive for a Sawatch 14er and the hike is divided into 3 or 4 unique and distinct sections that keep it interesting.

Spectacular views of the Apostles, fun route-finding on descent, saw a mountain lion during off-trail traverse back to trail

Got the 4WD parking at 10,600 ft. on the same day that I did La Plata. The sky was clear so I went late and was on the summit at around 7 pm and back down around 9:15.

Took a few first timers for my 72nd trip to 14k. Nice day and good views in the Apostle basin. Saw lots of goats on the south ridge.

Nice hike, great scenery. Hiked with Jason Kelley.

Reclimbed standard route with my boys, Nicholas and Benjamin August 1, 2014. Great day, a little drizzly, even a few flakes on top. Not bad for August!

Route Climbed: west face from S. Winfield TH Date Climbed: 21 Aug 2005  Sucess!

A leisurely climb with the family: my wife Suzanne (#11 for her), daughter Trish (#16), granddaughter Amber (#4), and grandson Ted. Ted's first fourteener. A surprisingly beautiful summit, and not really very crowded for an August Sunday! Grapple fell, but we had glorious sunshine on the summit.

Great day in the mountains with Alan, Shari, Nora and most importantly, my son JP. It was his first 14er and he did it in grand style. As always, I am very proud of him.

Route Climbed: Northwest slopes from S Winfield Trailhead Date Climbed: August 8, 2005  Sucess!

Started at the bottom of the 4WD road (there is no way on earth that my car could make it up that road). This is an "easy"14'er that I did with Spencer the Mountain Dog (his 8th 14'er summit, 9th 14'er attempt). I was surprised that we had the summit to ourselves on a pleasant Sunday in August. About 5:25 round trip from the car (4:10 from the "real" trailhead) on the most beautifully maintained trail- this would be perfect for a trail run if I was in a bit better shape!.

This was the easiest of the four 14er I hiked in the Sawatch Range this week. Number 12 on the 14er list. Summited with my hiking cousin, Shane and Trent. Somebody should have been taking tickets on top. There were 17 bodies on the summit.

I'm not sure what I was happier about, summiting Mt Huron in two hours or not having to drive down Chaffee 390 in order to get to another 14er! This was an easy and very fun hike. I would recommend it to anyone!

Be sure to stay right at all turns as you drive the 4WD trail from Winthrop. Ascent from 4WD closure. Dry all the way to the top. Amazing views of Ice Mtn -- there's a tantalizing couliour leading to the tippy-top over there....

Route Climbed: North Ridge Date Climbed: July 4, 2005  Sucess!

I started out from Winfield on the North Ridge route (route 12.2 in Roach's guidebook), but instead of going east into Lulu Gulch, I continued south into the Banker Mine drainage, for my Trails Illustrated map shows a primitive trail continuing on to the main Huron Peak trail. What a mistake! The jeep trail peters out, so I had to climb directly up the hill and over to Browns Peak. Then I traversed over to Huron and then headed back down via the standard route. It was a very tiring day, but what the hell, it builds character and all that.
