Hurricane starts at Jahňací štít (2229 m)

Hurricane starts at Jahňací štít (2229 m). The summit is reachable for hikers, but only in summer. More than 9000 trees were broken in Tatras by the wind and some cars and roofs were destroyed next day. Fortunately nobody was hurt. We descended safely. The date of the photo: 26th january 2008

WoW what a storm!

I am glad you are safe! Sounds like quite a experience!
Mother Nature gets angry sometimes and we have to get out
of her way!

cheers

Re: WoW what a storm!

I wanted to climb a mountain a lot, but that would not be safe. We slept another night in a chalet nearby, but on the next morning (on sunday) we descended carefully to the valley due to inappropriate conditions - high avalanche danger combined with hurricane and no visibility... We must have escaped the angry nature.

honourable!

Jahnaci looks really serious here! great peak with great views in a great surrounding...in such conditions it would be risky to traverse summit area from western side, very nice shot.

Re: honourable!

Hi Tomek, you're absolutely right. Traversing summit from west could be deadly in such a conditions. Thanks for your nice comment. Cheers Tomas :)

nice shot!!

I very like Jahnaci!!But it's west traverse is too narrow to climb it during winter:((
I climed it last time 2 years ago at the end of October and there were a little snow conditions..beautiful views!!

Re: nice shot!!

Yes, Jahnaci is a very nice summit. Tatras in october is generally a fantastic idea. October is definitely the best month of hiking year in Tatras - you know it better on Jahnaci - I was there in july 2005 and nice views there were, but also clouds and veeery hot :)

Tomas...

This is a 'monster' of a mountain! I'm
very glad to hear that nobody was hurt.
More than 9,000 trees fell down??? When
that happens, does somebody remove the
trees from the trail, or are those trees
protected and left alone? The people in
Slovakia would like to use those trees for
firewood, right? Just curious. Hope you
get to do some climbing or hiking with
Ivona sometime. Take care of yourself!!!

Re: Tomas...

All these trees are protected - there's complicated legal and ownership relations and quarrels. However, if there are any trees on the trail, the Office of state forests is obliged to remove trees from the trail. Sometimes it takes a long time, but it is always marked in the terrain, that the trail is partly or completely crossed by fallen trees. Information about the availability of trails in Slovak part of Tatras is always at the web of the Mountain rescue team.
