House of Four Doors

House of Four Doors

"Please summon the Gatekeeper!" "These are natural arches, holes in the rock, windows in stone, no two alike, as varied in form as dimension. They range in size from holes just big enough to walk through to openings large enough to contain the dome of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Some resemble jug handles or flying buttresses ... In color, they shade from off-white through buff, pink, brown, and red, tones that change with the time-of-day and the moods of the light, the weather and the sky." (Desert Solitaire, Edward Abbey, 1968) Arches National Park, Utah, contains the largest concentration of natural arches in the world. This is a close-up of Turret Arch, looking west. Among the Park's collection of over 2,000 arches, some I thought to be over 5 million years old. April 27, 2009

Re: cool

Big Rob? You wouldn't be saying that unless it
were true?

Utah is nice with its arches and slickrock,
but I'm about ready to give CO a try.

Not as much

desert sanstone, but some. The weather was awesome this last weekend, we climbed Dallas Peak, CO's 100th highest and the hardest to reach the summit by the easiest route 5.3.

There are some nice rock formations on the Dolores River close to Dove Creek CO.

Re: Not as much

Yes, and let's not forget Garden of the Gods!

The Flatirons are fascinating, but I don't
know if I want to travel that far east.

You are producing a lot of very impressive images and some great narrative to go with them. A cut above normal Summit Post bill of fare.
