The Dark Prince

The Dark Prince

"And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting - Still is sitting - on the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door; And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming, And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor ..." (Edgar Allan Poe - 1845) Often honored among medicine and holy men for its shape-shifting abilities, the Raven was called upon in ritual so that visions could be clarified. Native holy men understood that what the physical eye sees, is NOT necessarily the truth, and he would call upon the Raven for clarity and peace-of-mind. The Raven still is sitting ... on a dead pine tree (about 2 miles up the West Fork Trail) near the West Fork of Oak Creek in central Arizona. And, just in time for All-Hallows-Eve. October 22, 2009

Re: Nice photo,

Thanks, Ejnar!

Don't know why, but it reminds me of the
Hitchcock Classic from 1963...

Thanks, Hiltrud!

Actually, the colours of the cliff behind the bird are completely natural.

Re: Great shot!

Thanks, K!

This moment took me by complete surprise. Another raven had attracted my attention
down by the creek.

I suddenly looked up, and spotted this one
in a dead tree directly above me on the trail coming down outta West Fork near Sedona.

Well done Larry!

I just wrote an essay on "The Raven". Great shot. Don't know if you are a Simpsons fan, but they did a great spin off of the poem in one of the Halloween episodes. Happy Halloween!

I got a whole bunch of 'em

They have taken a liking to my neck of the woods. Boy, can they eat! I'm sure the big guy (who is about 18" long) is going to lift one of the sheep and take it for lunch!

Re: I got a whole bunch of 'em

That's big for a Raven.

I haven't tasted sheep in a long time.
I think I had a good taste of mutton when
I was in Portsmouth during the Cold War.

I could NOT have my pudding until I first
consumed my mutton.
